Unhappy SMART failure predicted


Hi..i have an Acer Aspire 5672WLMI laptop..2yrs old now..i have been getting SMART failue predicted message during booting...i downloaded HD Tune and found the HDD temp going upto 55c with normal operations i.e browsing net..no movie..no music..and here what the HD Tune shows:

What i wantd to know is,if i change the hard drive when it dies how do i get back the OS?as the laptop came with Genuine WinXP home edition...is there a way to retain the OS copy nd use the same with the new hard drive?

Make a copy/image/ghost of the partition wit norton ghost...

by doing this i wont be losing the OS and can restore the same on the new HDD?

I did a backup of the primary partition using the Windows Backup option,will that be fine too??

You wont loose the OS if you ghost it. But if you ask me, thats not the best idea - a fresh install of XP will get rid of gunk and all and is likely to give you much better performance. But for that you need an XP disc. You cant get that thru ghosting and all.

You may however not be able to ghost it in the 1st place... if you disk is returning read errors.

Like the second link says, use the Seagate tool.

tht means i will loose the OS if i use the Windows Backup option to backup the partition?

Cant recall the details about Win backup. Never used it either. But I guess you will almost definitely loose the OS. Back up utilities are not usually ment to back up an OS!

I guess your disk will be in warranty. You should back up your imp data asap... and claim warranty.

Its an laptop and is out of warranty...

any idea if microsoft will be able to help?coz i have the WindowsXP key sticker on the back of my lappy...cant afford to loose an genuine OS..

If you can get a XP Home install CD from somewhere and then use your current serial, I guess MS might authenticate your XP as genuine. As far as I can remember, MS checks for some specific hardware to see if you are the same person. Cant recall more details at the moment. Wait and see if someone else here gives you a better answer.

Hi frienz! You can go to http://www.acerpanam.com to get back your driver. Its free download or u can sms me at hairy77power@hotmail.com i can give u a serial for uniblue driver scanner 2009. For uniblue program, you can surf to http://www.uniblue.com downloads & install. Use the serial i pass to you once you email to me. You can use uniblue to install back all your acer driver.
