Default graphic card upgrade(PCI) or motherboard upgrade?

i have a intel 845glly. the problem is that i wanted to upgrade my graphics card but i have a PCI slot so i have limited choices. i have the option of ati radeon 9250. but my hardware venderor was teling me that i should not buy a pci card and should go for a motherboard upgrade...but my motherboard is not compatible with nowadays' processors so i would have to go for an entire system overhaul...i wanted to know that is my venderor cheating me or i should go for a total upgrade...also please suggest the best config i can have below rs10k

yes dude u should go in for a mobo upgrade with a pci-express card slot. even if u had an agp slot it would have been fine.but pci wont do.
