Default REVIEW >> Enemy Territory: Quake Wars ! ! !

Do you remember Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory? It was a free download and a great multiplayer game. I remember spending hours playing online with my LAN buddies. The game was fast; it was intense, and the gun battles were engrossing. Well, this time around, the Enemy Territory franchise (it can be called a franchise now) has its second shot at PC gaming with the brilliantly designed Enemy Territory-Quake Wars (QW).

The game is similar in gameplay to the Battlefield series, with a few different game modes. But QW is a different experience; it's more complicated and mind boggling (in a good way) than the Battldfield series. Read on to know more.

Summary :

The game focuses mainly on Multiplayer, but unlike the quake series, this isn't based on 1-on-1 combat. Instead, the combat focuses more on team effort. There are various classes that have special abilities -- all of which have to work together to accomplish the objective of the game.

Let me discuss the classes in detail. Every game or match that you play is a part of the Quake universe; you are a member of the GDF (Global Defense Forces); and your objective is to destroy key Strogg points and locations. Although the game has a separate storyline, the basic plot revolves around the quake series. The idea is simple to play as the GDF or the Strogg and win the match. Matches are based around various objectives that one has to complete. There are 5 different classes or solider types in the game.

Soldier (GDF) and Aggressor (Strogg) :

The Soldier and Aggressor are the standard units of each army. They have maximum health and a wide array of weapons (like rocket launchers, assault rifles, scoped Rifles) to choose from. This is the main unit, wherein you are required to do a lot of dirty work -- from blowing up stuff to capturing key locations.

Field Ops (GDF) and Oppressors (Strogg) :

These are vital and supportive soliders. Their main ability is to place offensive weapons like dark matter canons, artillery, and hammer missile launchers. After placing the weapons, the Field ops unit has to target manually the area or enemy weapon that it wants destroyed. Both sides also get a quick and lethal attack, which the field ops can execute. The GDF gets an air strike, and the Strogg get an Orbital Strike. They can also provide ammo and shields respectively.

Medic (GDF) and Technician (Strogg) :

These are unties that can heal and revive dead friendly soldiers. They can also provide you with health packs -- which comes quite handy. If a friendly unit dies while raiding an important position or completing an important mission, the medic can revive him in battle at half the health.

Covert Ops (GDF) and Infiltrator (Strogg) :

These units can hack enemy units or disable weaponry. They also have an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) grenade to stop weapons from firing for a limited amount of time. They can also steal an enemy's identity and mimic their looks, but they can only use a knife during that time. They can deploy radars and fill an area to give teammates an upper hand. This is a crucial unit type.

Engineer (GDF) and Constructor (Strogg) :

Primarily defensive units, the Engineer and Constructor can place anti-vehicle, anti-personnel, and anti-artillery turrets. They're useful in defending an area or key location and are very effective in battle.

Other than the special abilities, each unit type comes with a different weapon and other tools. It's very important that the team keeps a balance of all the unit types to win a battle.

Gameplay :

The basic gameplay revolves around completing a set of objectives and disabling the enemy. When you complete your unique set of objectives, you will end up capturing the enemy base. As you complete mission after mission in a particular game, you'll earn exp. Like an RPG, this exp will make you better in combat. You'll be able to run faster, shoot and reload faster, and so on. This unique and rewarding system will make you work overtime to complete objectives. The gameplay is addictive and keeps you hooked on for hours. There is a host of weapons and vehicles to choose from -- you've tanks, jeeps, and quad-bikes that you can use to travel and eliminate the enemy. The game isn't very easy, and it'll take you a lot of time getting used to it. Also, the enemy will ensure you've a hard time. You'll take a few matches to understand and defeat the game.

Graphics and Sound :

The game is based on an optimized Doom 3 engine and looks great with lots of detail. It has great level design that ranges from snow-clad areas to desserts to islands. The game plays very smooth. I was able to achieve 30-35 FPS at high settings.

Reviewers Rig :
CPU: Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.6 Ghz
2GB RAM
8600GTS 256 MB graphics card

System Requirements :
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, 512 MB RAM (768 MB RAM for Windows Vista), 128 MB NVIDIA Geforce 5700 or ATI Radeon 9700 with OpenGL 2.0 drivers

Final Verdict :
ET is a great multiplayer package and offers more than most PC games today.

Hellgate london (gets repititive and lacks punch)
Battlefield 2142 (nothing but futuristic soldiers with ozzy guns)
Jericho (the most scary game from Clive barker, was it really a much scary or run of the mill game?)

and those frogger 2 style jumps in Crysis with lame story, what willl AI do when u are one man army kicking their bum right away with those super powers. I hope devceloper will do the justice.

errr.... are there any Game Servers for this game in India? From my experience, there are mostly only CS severs in India and fellow Indians have a difficult enough time getting decent framerates in CS (Onboard Gfx and the like, ugh )...... let alone play a game like Quake Wars

This game uses much less bandwidth than TF2. I saw it myself. Probably less than 20 MB for 1 hour. Will have to check for definite answer.

No. But it has bots. Actually who needs Single player when you have multiplayer. SP ends in hours, MP lasts for ever
