Running games at forced resolutions

How can I run a game at a forced resolution? Is there any software for this?

If a game runs at 640 x 480 resolution and there is no option in the game to run at a higher resolution, how to make it to run at a higher resolution?

thz not possible becoz if it doesnt offer a choice of higher reolution , tht means it wasnt coded for a higher res., the higher the res. the more no. of polygons to be drawn and more code execution , where do u get instructions without the code. Not possib. I'm talkin of 3D games though.
