I think you have got a Pirated CD, that can be the only reason for this.

OK let me tell u the solution. The PC verson of this game is really bad. Try playing this game on the PS instead if u can. Anyways, I faced the same problem with the PC version & here is the solution-
1. Install the game only in the default directory ( I think its the c:/program files/MGS or something like that). The run the update patch provided on the CD. The reason u find this problem is that the PC version is really badly designed. You absolutely have to install the patch to get the game to work or else it will keep asking u for the CD. And the patch gets installed only in the default diectory & nowhere else. So if u have installed the game in any other directory other than the default directory, & then try to run the patch, the patch installs itself in the default directory & not the directory in which the game is actualy installed. And hence u get the error. So u either install the gamein the default directory & then run the patch update. Or else install the game in whichever directory u want, run the patch update. Then cut & paste the updated files from the default directory to the directory that u installed the game in. This should hopefully solve ur problem. I hope u got that.

hmmm... first of all, the game is over 5 years old. If I remember right, it was released sometime in 1999. So u can't really compare it to anything new as far as the gfx are concerned. But the gfx aren't too bad either. SOftware mode will be very bad.
Having put all the issues aside, the game is a true classic. The PC version lacks some of the goodies of the PS version, but still, I hope u enjoy it as much as I did 5 years ago & still do. Me a big snake fan!

Whoa! I wasn't comparing it to any of the latest games neway! But considering what I was expecting from MGS (even considering it was 5 years old), and given the screenshots on the cover and all, it looked way too bad! Of course its' running in s/w mode partly justifies the quality. But still I expected something better. That's all.
BTW I consider NFS : 2000's graphix to be beautiful. So my standards aren't that exacting!

Even I have been unable to get it to run on any mode apart from software, though my card is shown as "supported" ...
