i recently buyed out a new config for me of the following specification....
pentium dual core 4 mb l2 cahe memory
intel d102gc2 motherboard
512 mb ddr2 ram * 2 @ 533 mhz of dyno
160 gb sagate sata hard drive
xfx nvidia pci xpress card of 256 mb ( i think of 6500 series)
17inch lcd samsung monitor of (sync master e700 )
logitech keyboard and mouse
sony dual layer dvd writer
a quantak cabinet with smps
a sony floppy drive

yup, u can play possibly all the latest games in low or mid-low settings with smooth frame-rates

You can run 90% of the games with decent frame rates however many of the new games won't be higher than 800x600 low settings.
