how can i play aoe with my friend online

hi i have recently got a broad band coonnecton .i have age of empire game my friend also has it we want to play it via internet

i have age of empires 2 conqueres. i have 64kbps net connection.i tried the tcpip option in it and entered my friends ip address but i got no response. but we tried playing 3d live pool the same way and when i entered his ip address we got connected.i would like to mention one thing though,i just copy pasted the whole game dir from my friends hdd i did not install it is this the reason.if i get the cd and install it then will i be able to play.and also pls tel me abt gamespy arcade and other such sites what are they all abt???

Check your firewall settings to make it allow incoming connections for AoE (give it full access)

Or simply, use Hamachi.
