Lost Coast is actually not an expansion to HL2. As of now, it is just supposed to be a tech demo made to show off the Source engines HDR capabilities. It's a level designed to show how much eye candy the devlopers can pack in if they were fred from the hardware constraints.
Although one could easily dismiss the demo for not adding anything to the story line, Gabe Newell in a presentation made much before the demo was out, had said that the cathedral one sees at the end of the demo is very important to the plot. We will get to realise it's importance later on in the series, possibly Aftermath or HL3.
So while the Lost Coast is a tech-demo, it still adds more question to the HL2 plot. The only expansion that is in the works for HL2 and has been confirmend is Aftermath. It's scheduled to be released in November 2005. The dates are tentative.
