Frustating Half Life 2 experience

Hello ppl,
I am facing a very peculiar problem with hl2. I had handed my hard disk to a friend of mine, and he copied the Half Life 2 folder on his PC to my hard disk on my request. I had to ask him to do this 'coz out here in Nepal, I haven't found any original versions of the game, and the pirated DVD version just doesn't work on my Samsung Combo. Anyways, he copied the whole game folder to my HDD, but the game gives me a peculiar problem. It runs for some 30-40 seconds, where it runs just fine. After that, it crashes to the desktop, with the message "Conection to Steam servers lost. Couldn't find necessary game files." . My PC config. is not a problem at all. Also, there are no issues with the Steam engine, 'coz my friend said he had copied the same files from the DVD, and it works just fine on his comp. This is really making this game a frustrating experience for me <<Note that I really love Half-Life titles.>> Could anyone help me with this problem? I would really be gr8ful........
