Default Problem connecting PS3 to LCD monitor

Hey friends.. my cousin just bought a slim PS3 this week.. He has AOC F22 Full HD LCD monitor.. it has a DVI & a D-Sub port.. he also bought a HDMI to DVI cable, but in spite of doing everything, we still can't connect his PS3 to his monitor.. any suggestions...

What exactly happens when you connect it to the monitor?

There was no display.. but never mind, got it sorted out.. I had to press the power button on the PS3 for 5 secs and then it worked..
