You know the drill, don't you?
Since I don't have the game installed, I got this from Google bhau.
Locate the video configuration file for the game. In this case it should be:
C:\Program Files\Left 4 Dead\left4dead\cfg\videodefaults.txt AND
C:\Program Files\Left 4 Dead\left4dead\cfg\video.txt
The lines should have:

Start the game & it should create a save game directory in My Documents.
So browse to your 'My Documents' folder. It should have a directory called Wolverine. Within that, head off to 'WGame' & then open the 'Config' directory. Locate a file called WEngine.ini. That would have a line called 'ResX' & 'ResY'. Configure your custom resolution, save & run.

Notice the default 1280x720 is not changed in [SystemSettingsEditor] tab. My default resolution is 1280x1024 which is available in the option menu. Make sure you change it from the .ini file & don't go into the options menu within the game, else the entire setting would reset itself.

Boss, if I set it to read-only mode, I don't get the display. If I don't keep it to read-only mode, it reverts back to 1280x720 which is not supported by my screen. If I keep the Fullscreen=False, even then too, game tends to run in Fullscreen Mode, As the prognosis goes, either way I'm phucked  Ab what to do? Hell even setting the res. to 1024x768, I get No Signal Screen!

Then I guess that's your cue for getting a better monitor.
That's the common UE 3 file which allows you to customise anything. You'll find it in pretty much every UE3 game. The resolution your HDTV sports is a very uncommon one for PC gaming. So you'll face issues like this pretty often.
I'm not sure if this would work but worth a shot. It worked for me to force John Woo's Stranglehold into my custom resolution.
Add this line at the end of the Target line of the shortcut icon:
"-language=eng -ResX= -ResY="
The above line should be inserted without the quotes. X & Y are your custom resolutions.

Don't worry mate and thanx for continuous support. I fixed the b1tch. As I've Vista so what I did was just right-clicked on the game's exe and under compatibility, I forced it to run on 640x480 res and then when it got clicking, I changed the res. to 1024x768 from inside the game's options. Just made it to the Crash site and loving it!  Too bad can't play more as final practicals from 18th and semester exams from 2nd June.
