Default Attention Readers: December 2005 Movie DVD Problems?

Dear Readers,

We have received a few complaints about the Terminator 2 / Discovery Kids' Ultimate Guide To The Human Body DVD. The problem that readers seem to be facing is that of a missing DVD codec, which is generally installed along with DVD Movie Player Software.

Windows Media Player 10 does not include DVD Codecs by default, and your system will need to have some other DVD Movie Player software installed as well. When you buy a DVD-ROM / Combo / DVD-Writer drive, you are supposed to get a software DVD player along with it. This is generally located in the CD or DVD that contains the drivers and additional software (CD/DVD burning software) for your drive. The most common DVD Movie applications that are bundled with DVD drives are PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc.

To check whether you have a DVD decoder installed on your system, follow these steps:
  1. Click on Start > Run, type “DVDUPGRD /DETECT” (without the quotes) and press [Enter]
  2. A box will pop up. This box will contain information of the DVD decoders installed on your computer.
  3. If the box looks like any of the images below, then you have a DVD Decoder installed, and should be able to view the DVD in any media player.
  4. However, if the box that pops up after step 2 looks like the one shown below, you do not have a DVD Decoder installed and will need to find the CD that came with your DVD-ROM / DVD-Writer / Combo drive and install the DVD Movie Player Software contained therein.

If you did not get a software CD / DVD with your DVD drive, please contact your system assembler or vendor and demand the same. Every DVD drive is bundled with DVD Movie software, and you are entitled to get it too.

If for some reason you cannot get the DVD Movie Player software from anywhere, you will need to follow the steps below:
  1. Put the Digit December 2005 CD into your drive, and browse to the Digital Tools > Essentials section.
  2. Locate Kazaa Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.40 and click on the “Install” button. If you are browsing the CD through Windows Explorer, go to the Digital_Tools > Essentials folder and double-click on the file “klmcodec140.exe”.
  3. Click “Next” thrice until you reach the “Select Components” screen. You should see a list of the components, codecs and players that will be installed by Kazaa Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.40.
  4. Under the “DirectShow video filters” category tick the "Cyberlink DVD Decoder" option and also the "MPEG-2" option. Select the "CyberLink(video)" sub-option under the MPEG-2 header.
  5. Click “Next” and complete the installation. Restart the computer if asked to do so.
  6. Now insert the Movie DVD into your drive and you should be able to watch the movie.

We realize that the steps mentioned above can be time consuming and irritating, and hope that our readers understand that these steps are necessary in order to be able to watch ANY movie DVD on the PC, not just the Terminator 2 - Discovery DVD provided with the Digit December issue.

Those readers who have installed all the software that came with their DVD drive will not face any problems with movie DVDs.

Regards,

Raaabo

PS: I hope that clears up a lot of unnecessary confusion that has been caused by what is, for many, a first time experience with a movie DVD!

I would also like to add that the very first thing people need to do is ensure that they have a DVD drive, as we found a lot of people were trying to run the DVD on a CD drive, thinking that this was just like the Ice Age VCD that we had provided in a previous issue. To confirm:

The Terminator 2 / Discovery Kids DVD will ONLY run on a DVD movie player or on a PC DVD drive.

Still one of my friend say she was not able to play the DVD. Raaabo, I think some of the DVD might have been a coaster.
Anyways, I am yet to recieve my copy, I check if it plays in my DVD rom.

Why such a complex process when G spot finds all the codec (inc. that required for DVDs) that are installed in your PC.

Even the Windows media codec pack (came with Digit DVD, but not sure abt the issue) has the codec required to play DVDs withot any codec problems.

By the way, MY PC will NEVER have missing codec problems. and I have written a guide (sticky thread at QnA section). I will edit that thread with the changes and inputs from this thread

Ask her to run the DVDUPGRD /DETECT command and see if she has a DVD decoder installed. If not she needs to install one. Many people have faced this problem because they only use Windows Media Player, and to do so they need a decoder.

VLC Media Player, for example, plays DVD movies without even installing a decoder! There are hundreds of software such as G-spot that will tell you what is and isn't installed, but it can be confusing and will require readers to install 3rd Party software to do something that a simple command can tell them. This is why I gave them the command option. I cannot expect people to start installing software they may or may not want just to find out if they have a codec that's needed to play original DVD movies now can I?

Anyway, let's hope this process helps someone. A lot of people who mailed me found that this solution works, so hopefully forum members will find the same!

Raaabo

Yeah Raaabo, I Personally went and ran the DVDUPGRD command, it did have the codec required.. Even VLC player/MPC couldn't play the DVD. That's why I said, it might be a coaster.

G Spot does show what codec we have installed... it's not really difficult to "read" and infer the thing.. it comes with a small description as well.

Yeah we can't expect ppl to install this, moreover many of them might not even know abt this.

My system is WIN XP SP2 with WMP 10 and all latest updates... I also installed the DivX codecs though I know they are not responsible for running the DVD. Except that I have no extra codecs installed except Real Player n QuickTime...It runs wonderfully both on WMP 10 nd Real Player nd Cyberlink PowerDVD.. Mine is an LG-DVD ROM drive.. Sound+ Video awesome...

The image you're showing me highlights MPEG-4, where'd the MPEG-2 decoder that movie DVDs need?

Are you playing the movie in the Cyberlink player or Windows Media Player?? Audio and no video = no MPEG-2 decoder!

The audio_ts folder is supposed to be empty, that will only contain files on DVDs that have DVD audio. Like a music CD if you buy a music DVD, with 5.1 sound etc, you will see files in the audio_ts folder. Since this is a movie DVD, the audio_ts folder will be empty and files are only in video_ts. Hope that clears things up.

I just took the screenie just to show that G spot also has some small description of the codec installed.
Anyways.. MPG4, MP43, MP42 contains all the stuff that I need to play the DVD. DVDs play fine in my PC, so it's not an issue now
