Default Which is better, AMD Athlon or sempron?

Friends, I want to buy a sytem in my hostel.
We are planned to buy AMD athlon xp , which i has been using for 3 years.
Now I heard about sempron processor which has better performance and lower price.

Is sempron is good in graphics applications( animation...)?

We wil use the sytem for sound mixing also.

So which will you prefer for such uses as animations, sound mixing, music composing and recording...?

Sempron is for office Apps , good in gaming as well especially the ones with socket 754 .The Athlon XP has been phased out ,all you'll get is the AMD64 based Athlon 64 solutions .

Hi sarincv,

With the introduction of the Semprons, the Athlon XPs got phased out -- so the market got broken up into the low-end Semprons and the higher end AMD 64 Athlons.

The Semprons of today are all based on the Throughbred core of the Athlon XPs except the Sempron 3000+, whch is based on the Barton Core with 512 Kb cache. This processor is a good buy if you intend to stick to Semprons. Overall, I think the Semprons don't really match up to the performance the AMD Athlons XP used to give.

More information on Semprons here:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._11604,00.html

Please note that the Sempron 3100+ uses socket 754 and thus you need a socket 754 motherboard for that.

Semprons are basically for "Office machines," and not for animation, sound mixing, and stuff like that. You mentioned graphic applications. Graphics applications are highly dependent on the graphics card, more so than they are on the processor itself.

Sticking to AMD only, I think for the kind of applications you are looking at, you need to look at the AMD Athlon 64 processors, which are again available in two sockets - 754 and 939. The 939 socket ones cost more.

Hope it helps.

DH
