Default AMD Losing Some Metal

AMD has begun offering microprocessors with reduced lead content to customers worldwide, nearly a year in advance of the regulatory deadline.

The company claims that for several years it has been striving to reduce the lead content of its PC processor and chipset products and move to lead-free products.

The European Union has established a directive that restricts the use of lead by electronics manufacturers. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation takes effect July 1, 2006.

AMD began offering RoHS-compliant processors earlier this month and also has several RoHS-compliant chipsets already available.

Dirk Meyer, president and chief operating officer, microprocessor solutions, AMD, said, "AMD has been committed to using environmentally friendly materials in our operations. AMD is steadfastly developing effective technical solutions that reduce lead content and achieve RoHS compliance without sacrificing other product features."

AMD has formed a lead-free research and development program, and is working with suppliers to establish lead-free standards and testing requirements, as well as to identify lead substitutes.

In addition to its own manufacturing initiatives, AMD is actively supporting a number of universities and trade associations to expedite the development of lead-free technology.

Hey even if the CPU contains lead we are not gonna dump tons of processors nd cause pollution. They contain only in minute quantities.
It would be more impresive if they some how managed to reuse Silicon from older CPUs as once it is drained we wont have computers any more!!!!!!!

Hi aravind_n20,

We are not gonna to dump tons of used cpus now. But just think of matters after a few decades. All our
P4's and AMD 64 's will be useless then. We've to dump'em for sure.

Its already happening in the developed countrie where people discard hundreds of thousands of computers every year. There was this company which is making millions using old computer parts and taking out materials such as plastics etc and reusing them. But, amd's step is in the right direction. Small quantites of lead would lead to a huge amount if you check the amount of computers that are being sold worldwide every year.
