Apple explores use of Intel chips

NEW YORK - Apple Computer Inc. has been in talks that could lead to a decision soon to use Intel Corp. chips in its Macintosh computer line, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The report, citing two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies, said Apple will agree to use Intel chips.

Neither company would confirm the report and an Apple spokeswoman told the Journal she would characterize it as "rumor and speculation."

This scoop was made by The Wall Street Journal.
According 2 "experts", they will have second thoughts b4 making final decision... coz there r lots of risks involved

Earlier this year, Apple sued a blog site for reporting product information before the product came out.

Man that is sad. Apple has always been apart from the crowd. Doing their own thing and all wether it was chips, softwares etc.............Don't know how well this news will go down with macintosh fanatics though!!!

firstly... apple never made processors... in the early days, they sourced their PPC chips from Motorola and then IBM eventually. These companies even formed the AIM consortium, which is now owned by Intel. I think Intel is planning to enter the PPC arena too... I don't think apple will move to x86 anytime soon... considering the kind of costs involved in porting MAC OS X and the thousands of applications..

Also apple has a hardware division Introducing mac os x for x86 would kill its hardware sales

Apple Denies Intel Rumour

The word on the street was that Apple considering using Intel processors in future Mac products. The talks with Intel were reportedly aimed at replacing the current crop of IBM and Motorola PowerPC chips in an effort to keep up in performance terms with Intel-based PCs.

However, Apple are denying the reports stating the news should be placed 'in the category of rumour and speculation'.

These sort of reports surface from time to time and are occasionally aimed at sharpening the minds of the contractor reportedly about to lose out. In this case the rumour could be a warning to IBM and Motorola that Apple expects results.

Two years ago, there was similar talk of a tie-up between Apple and AMD, though nothing came of it.

Bye the way I had heard it on television also so it cannot be a rumour completely.

There is something brewing somewhere.

Yup ! but ...

It is worthwhile pointing out that just because something is rumour and speculation, it doesn’t mean that it is not true and will not come true. Just Apple does not want to talk about it.

The Wall Street Journal doesn't have the reputation of being a nexus of rumour and speculation
