What Hamachi does is set up a virtual static IP address for you. Through this, you can play games with others using your net connection. Hamachi is quite secure enough. And I don't think your net connection will be slowed down.
^^ All that, and you can connect to several networks, so it makes the OS think that you're a part of several LANs, so gaming and file sharing is made very simple, its just like in a lan.
If you want anomymity over internet using VPN, go for TOR.
