Hi _______,

I like your User ID

Is 30K budget only for the security system or for the entire setup (PC, display, etc.).

What have you got at hand? Do you already have a PC. What kind of surveillance system do you plan to build? - PC based / DVR / display based? Exterior / Interior surveillance?

I do not have any such system. Neither do I have any first hand experience in building it myself. I do not know the availability of products in India for this purpose, but you sure should get these in India.

If a PC based system, all you will need is a camera or two (depending upon your requirement), a PCI DVR Card and disk space. I guess it would be 1MB per minute of video (may be 1.5MB for audio+video) for an acceptable quality video (like 10fps). The setup should be pretty simple. Plug the camera phono cables into the PCI card. You should get software with the PCI card that will help you record / monitor / schedule. These software also allow you to setup a web server and monitor your cams remotely.

If I look up these systems in Europe, I see that a fine decent Sony sensor based tiny camera (0.5 LUX) costs about 35€ (2250 INR), PCI card to support upto 4 video cameras and 1 audio channel for about 120€ (7700 INR).

Research before shopping for these equipments. For example, find out how much of minimum LUX camera you will need to monitor the desired area.

Your best bet is to ask local PC hardware vendors for these equipments.

Do keep us informed about your findings. In case you setup a surveillance system, do post a tutorial / how-to for others.

Regards,
Bandu.
