Cool Why I Still Use Windows Despite the Peer Pressure (Finally, the truth!)

Why I Still Use Windows Despite the Peer Pressure

There are over a dozen people working at our fair Gizmodo, but as a Windows user, I'm in a definite minority. I still rock XP, and I'm pretty happy with that. Why haven't I switched to Macs? Plenty of reasons, not least of which being that I'm just too smart to switch to a Mac. That's right, I'm too smart for Macs. As Bill Gates's retirement rapidly approaches I figured now is a good time to lay out why I'm loyal to his OS.

I grew up with Windows. Although my first computer was a Mac Classic (I was like 3 at the time, and I only used it to play that helicopter game where you have to drop the little man into the horse-drawn hay carriage), I've been using Windows PCs for nearly my entire life, learning how to fiddle with the command prompt in DOS and dealing with the rudimentary pile of crap that was Windows 3.1. I survived Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME for a short, painful time, Windows 2000 and now, finally, Windows XP. It hasn't always been pretty (see: Windows ME), but through it all I've figured out every little trick there is to know about running Windows. I'm a monster on Windows. Read more…

[Via Gizmodo]

This article is pro-Windows for the most part, so much so that it almost amounts to Mac bashing. The author directly bashes Steve Jobs, for one thing.

So why am I posting it here? Because it speaks the truth. The hard truth that both Windows and Mac users should accept. For the first time in my life, I’ve realised exactly what keeps people like gx_saurav so loyal to Windows. Behind all the fanboyish zealotry, what makes them want to keep using it, even though it’s painfully evident that Mac OS X is a far superior operating system.

Give this article a read, all of you—the last paragraph in particular. All the points the author, Adam Frucci, says about Macs are true and so are the ones about Windows.

Here’s the answer I was looking for, summarised neatly in a couple of sentences:
Quote:
But really, when it comes down to it, the main reason I still use Windows is this: I'm stubborn and lazy. I don't want to switch because it will amount to admitting that I've been wrong for the last 15 years or so.
Thanks, Adam, for sating a burning curiosity I’ve had ever since I switched to Macs.

The last para just underlines the point that users like to stick with things with which they are familiar. And as for the being stubborn and lazy part, you chose the line you wished to notice and draw conclusions.

The following lines:
Quote:
And it would be just a huge pain to do it even if I swallowed my pride, having to relearn all the shortcuts and commands and little nuances that make an OS tick. I know all those for Windows already. I am just far too lazy to relearn OS X, and I don't care how easy you claim it
is.
So as they say..... Whatever keeps your boat afloat.....

I didn't find anything special in that article to be honest, felt like just another rant on the ever going war among various OS users. All he has done is give some practical reasons of people using and still sticking to Windows and later undermining everything by saying Windows users are lazy.

I don't agree with it at all. We all have been Windows users once and to be fair, we did have our moments with Windows however might that be. Of course, it's all my opinion.

No, like I said, the entire article is correct. His points about why he does not want to switch to Mac OS X are all valid. I do not disagree with anything he wrote and do not consider any one point more important than the others.

Thats why I quoted the rest of the lines of the paragraph, coz that single line quoted by you made it look like as the only important point.

Smile GNU/Linux and FOSS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is like whatever you find familiar is easy! that is a n00bish thing!
GNU/Linux Rocks! you wont need a geek to use that!
GET GNU/Linux

there are many bad things about winblow$ apart from it being monopolistic and vendor-locked.

it is like paying hitler(bill ...? ) for more killing by using and buying windows.

it is already late for the world to change from winblow$.you can change-let the change start from everyone.we should stop proprietary OS like apple os x ,winblow$ etc.

Software Developers -we must change the current ecosystem by Micro$haft.
with FOSS ,we can get a new system which is sane and free from moron's ideas like DRM,Software Patents etc. like we have softwares for almost everything and Subscription updates et al feeds developers.

Let FOSS rocks!kill the ruler!

Winblow$ users should consider reading this article patiently ,unlike searching for pirated copies of software and cracks/serials they do in sites like RS and torrents.

Linux!=Winblow$

Why not Windows

Quote:
Restrictions

A legal copy of Windows is expensive, but what do you get? Windows and Office are licensed, not sold.
By using these products, we have to agree to a number of harsh restrictions. For most Windows licenses, you can't keep the software when you change the hardware. You sometimes can't even give your software away. Who can run the software? On which computer? What can you do with it? The list of restrictions is long and some items are outrageous.
read our full article: Restrictions

What about choice?

Software should come without locks in it.
Why are Office documents difficult to export? Why are the formats continually changing? Why can you not even uninstall some programs? It might be that if you look for choice, Microsoft products aren't for you.
read our full article: What about choice?

No source code

The source codes of Windows and Office are hidden, so, no one is allowed to understand how these programs work.
If you can't get a right to inspect source code (the human-readable inner workings of a program), you can't have someone correct flaws or evaluate how your privacy is protected for you.
And guess what? On software that comes with source code, viruses and spyware aren't effective, and security isn't bought on extra. The antivirus software industry, in which Microsoft is now a significant player, prefers you to use Windows.
read our full article: No source code

Stand for a free society

A free society requires free software. Think of "free" as in freedom, not price: the freedoms to inspect, learn from, modify the software you use.
Computers are used to share ideas, culture and information. Without these freedoms over software, we risk losing control over what we share.
This is happening today. From plain annoying technologies such as Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) to downright frightening ones like Trusted Computing, everyone's ability to participate in culture is threatened.
If you have to give up your freedoms to use software, maybe you should not be happy with it.
read our full article: Stand for a free society

Many people find that Windows, an otherwise decent piece of software, withdraws so many rights from them, that it is not worth them using it. Mac OS is not much better, either.
If you find free software attractive, you might want to give Linux a try.

You are telling him to hoist the flag? From what I can tell, his neighbours must be telling him to atleast remove the ones in front of their house. Must be blocking their view.

When will you finally stop making overstatements?? Maybe OS X is a bit better than windows but it has some drawbacks of its own. Making such statements clearly shows that u live in a fantasy world where ppl like u rule!!

No OS is perfect but dude try to show some damn respect. May be its one of the things that a Mac does not teach you!

+1

This is another of those lame OS comparison thread that tries to compare a de-facto OS to a el-elito OS and starts talking trash.
