If I feel I might use it in the future, backup on a DVD, then delete from the drive. If not, shift-delete. Those are the only 2 options I use when I clean up my computer.

I don't have a unlimited connection but I use my 2 GB USB drives! I backup only IMPORTANT files such as my scripts, etc.

I take monthly backups mostly. On DVDs. For sites database, I configured daily backup (to my local PC) and I burn that to DVD every month.

Most of the softwares I use has portable version (FireFox, ThunderBird, XAMPP, FileZilla, OpenOffice, VLC Media Player, SunBird, PidGin, 7 Zip etc) and it is very helpful for me while taking backups.

Slightly offtopic, but it is worth visiting this site

http://portableapps.com

When we use a portable app, it is very easy to take complete backup.

True, esp with those Rs.6 CD which I get here in the down-market.

Yes, I agree, but for taking data backups like 40 or 80 GB every month, no other option for me

I always buy the best DVD / CD available in the market, but yes, still there is risk.

I think there is no 100% safe backup.

HDD may crash, CD / DVD may have scratches, USB drive may not work and so on.

Best strategy may be - multiple copies. One in HDD, then in DVD etc.

there is 1 more way - take bluehost hosting package which has Unlimited storage and b/w and costs abt 7$ month. Or take any multiple free hosting a/c but paid hosting with bluehost will be reliable..

And howmuch bandwidth and time will you need to upload it and then download it?

That will be the most expensive, less reliable, full of hassles method!
