In Australia, Dhoni prefers boots over bikes
February 8: MS Dhoni is a maverick of sorts. A cool-headed cricketer, he also likes to be in the fast lane. While his fetish for super-bikes is well known, Dhoni has not taken a fancy for flashy cars as yet. The numerous sports cars that roam the streets of Australia, he says, ‘‘attract me little’’. But the fashion conscious player from Ranchi made it a point to order specially made boots from RM Williams in Adelaide.
RMW have a world-wide reputation as quality maker of boots and accessories for the last 70 years. So impressed was Dhoni with the handmade boots, that he placed an order for eight pairs. ‘‘They are very comfortable and I liked them a lot so I thought of buying eight pairs as I found the colours of the leather attractive. The shoes are also very comfortable,’’ he revealed.
Many other players followed suit. Not just shoes, they bought belts to go with their jeans as well. The bulk-buying helped the group get a hefty discount too. The goods will be collected when the Indian team arrives in Adelaide again for the tri-series game on February 13. For the record, a pair of Williams’ shoes costs no less than 350 Australian dollars!
Dine together, stay together
The young Indian team seems to be gelling well. Even the Test team was a united bunch and believed in having a sit-down dinner at the restaurant in the team hotel. However, this One-day unit is said to be relishing such occasions, according to an insider. ‘‘Before any big game such a dinner assumes its own importance. The youngsters use the opportunity to get across to the seniors and speak their mind. It’s become a ritual,’’ he informed.
No, no to Casino
The famous three-storied Crown Casino here is located at a stone’s throw away from the Indian team hotel, but it has found no takers yet. Tennis stars Roger Federer and Marat Safin have been the star visitors at ‘‘Crown’’ for a round of Black Jack and Russian Roulette, but for Indian cricketers it’s been a strict no-no. ‘‘During the Test there was just no time and even now we are using the break to recharge our energies and to mentally prepare for the challenge on the field. We don’t even look that way,’’ said a player on condition of anonymity.
