Usually we come across this situation when we're looking for a Doctor or Hospital in the nearby location? Wondering whether the Doctor is good or bad? How do his patients rate him? Worst, you want to crib about a Doctor who gave you all those costly medicines for no bloody reason? Well, hit the wild web... and make your own decision!

And to help you out... I've recently launched the BETA version of HealthcareMagic. HealthcareMagic is India's first Health 2.0 Portal bridging the gap between end-users like us and Healthcare services in an interactive Web 2.0 user-friendly way.

HealthcareMagic allows live interaction between doctors and patients, and is a integrated comparison portal for health. Most importantly, the portal allows reviews of doctors/hospitals and Healthcare products/services. We've done the portal nicely and one can search for doctors/hospitals based on specialties/area code, as well as chat with doctors online. Currently the portal is Bangalore-only, we will be expanding the portal yo you city very soon.

Highly subjective. If its made by a well informed patient then yes, it can be given credit.

Evaluating hospitals on service yes. If you are looking at success and/or infection rates again you have to see whether:
1. Its a closed setup or not. I n a closed setup a hospital has a set of doctors who admit patients there. Other doctors are not allowed to admit patients.
2. Are infection control protocols being followed by all consultants, attached and/or visiting.
3. Are protocols pertaining to accreditation (like ISO) really being followed or are only on paper.

Again patients views???? Subjective

For a doctor to be available to chat between 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.???? That doctor will have to be REALLY JOBLESS.

Collecting the data and organizing into a database is good.

But I can see some obvious problems with it:
1. How can you rely on patient's view solely? For God's sake, don't make medical profession the one where you can review products(read doctors) as
one available in your City market. A doctor's profession is too unique to be understood by a layman.

I will give you a real example: We have a member in this forum who had some problems with his doctor's prescription. Me being in the medical profession, when asked about the prescription, found the prescription to be completely correct. Infact, even when he got a 2nd consultation, he was prescribed the same medicines. So you see how 'useless' such opinions are.


2. How will you 'scrutinize' the patient opinions? Will you appoint verifying agencies? What if rival doctor poses as patient and posts incorrect reviews?

3. And the doctors who are available for FREE CHAT, how will patients authenticate them?

Overall, I will be positive on this project only if the views are 'scrutinized'. Else, it will limited to a good database(a plus point)

And yeah, medical profession is about skills. The more skilled you need, more you have to pay, just like any other profession.

To answer to the queries put forth by Shenoy.

Let us look at the options available to a patient today when he/ she has to decide on a particular physician to manage a case of viral fever.

Info from relatives, friends and colleagues

Let us up the ante and look at a case of elective surgery-let's say Discectomy

• Info from relatives, friends and colleagues
• Information from Doctor who has given referral
• Networking through Docs in terms of one to two degrees of separation
• Information through direct interaction with administrative personnel of hospitals
• Information through portals of prominent hospitals

The point I am trying to make is that there is paucity of information in the system, difficulty in getting the information and still more difficult to comment on the quality/ veracity of information.

To move to my second point. The higher the priority, the more information that we require. It is not difficult to come to a conclusion that healthcare is of very high priority for any of us.

To combine both points, Healthcare is of very high priority to us and it is in Healthcare that we make decisions with least information.

In this respect, HealthcareMagic strives to bring more information to the end consumer.

Now let us move on to the quality of information which are visible on the portal. In this respect, we@HealthcareMagic would like to say that we have systems and controls in place to check the veracity of information.
For example:

• If we receive a review about a Doctor/ Hospital, we call up the number, as submitted by the user. If the number is erroneous, we do not load the review, irrespective of whether the review is positive or negative.Everything is moderated on this platform.
  
• If we receive a review by a Doctor praising his/ her own practice, we do not publish the review as it will inevitably be profusely positive and biased.

In this way we do have systems and controls to check the flow of information onto our portal.

The people behind the show are 4 Doctors of which 2 Doctors have done their PG from IIM-Lucknow, IIT Graduates & Solid technical guys... who are known industry figures.

We want to make sure that people "share experiences and mostly positive experiences" about a Doctor. And not a forum which treats them as a commodity so any unknown figure (not verified by phone call) can come and post reviews. Why don't you try posting one review and you will come to know our scrutinization process (Nothing will go up on a portal till the time our Doctor verifies your identity and also identifies the identity of the Doctor about whom you are writing). We are doing a good service to the country, people and to our Doctor fraternity.

But frankly, I don't get how you are going to manage all this without charging a penny from visitors.

The Doctors who chat with the patients are well qualified with practice experience in the US and Australia and a minimum experience of 6 years each. They are on the payroll of the company and they have already handled 800 live chats in 3 weeks (with 22000 hits on the portal) !!! So they are by no means SITTING JOBLESS .

We are recruiting young and net savvy doctors so you can recommend some of your friends.

Yes, advertisement of Pharma companies, Health Insurance companies is a major source of revenue.

Thank you for the clarification. So I understand that:

1. The doctors who will be chatting with the patients WILL NOT BE the ones they are going to consult eventually? If they are practising how do they manage to clock so many hours on chat?!

2. These are third party specialist doctors who work for you.
