Bill Gates can no longer be referred to as “the richest man on the planet.” That title now belongs to Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim who is now worth an estimated $67.8 billion (Gates’ fortune is estimated at around by $59.2 billion). The new ranking comes via a recent surge in the share price of America Movil, Slim’s cellular company.
The new role for the telecom mogul is likely to have the unintended side effect of shedding more light on the poverty afflicting Mexico that continues to drive illegal immigration into the United States (one of the biggest stories in American politics today). That the world’s richest man also hails from the same place experiencing massive worker flight into the U.S. in search of a living wage isn’t the best looking business story. On the upside, perhaps now Gates can continue giving his money away in peace now that the “world’s richest man” spotlight has been directed elsewhere.
