Re: Post your latest Purchase
Purchased the Sapphire HD 6950 2GB yesterday for 15k from MD Computers. Its the non-reference model with custom cooler and PCB. Thanks to Palash Da, it was a pre-order.
Initially planned to buy the 6970 but settled for this in the end. Its a conscious decision on my part because I am hearing rumors that GTX 6xx and Radeon HD 7xxx series will be launched this December around Christmas/New Year. I definitely want a piece of the new 28nm beasts. So I have already started saving up for a Christmas treat and saving 7k on the 6950 will contribute to that
Anyway here are the pics:

Sorry, forgot to take pics of the actual card before installing but this is the one I bought:
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100312-2SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
Just tested two games so far. GTA IV and Metro 2033.
I am getting average 70fps on GTA IV with all settings maxed out including 100 draw distance. The game's using close to 1.3GB VRAM at max details.
Also tested Metro 2033 but damn this game sure is buggy as hell. It would crash straight away after firing it up. A little google search revealed its a widespread problem with the game. Anyway long story short, finally got it working around 2am yesterday after searching for 4 hours on Google for a fix but now it only runs in DX9 and low settings at 1080p res. Cranking up the settings any higher crashes the game straighaway. Getting around 150 fps at low settings though. If someone has any fix please let me know.

Re: Post your latest Purchase
Congrats. And fake your age.
Looked just like my 1gb version. The box is exactly the same except the logo with the amount of RAM and so is the card. Tell me one thing, what's the length of the card. Is it overreaching the mobo or just at the end? (I am guessing you have a ATX mobo). I am getting a hunch it is just the 1gb PCB with 2gb RAM slapped in.
And if you really upgrade during December-January and are willing to sell this, contact me first.

Re: Post your latest Purchase
Congrats dude and as d3p5kor said, they won't check your birth certificate. So just enter a fake birth year.
Thanks for reminding me. I need to register my Sapphire card too for gold membership.
It extends right till the end of the mobo (ATX) length wise, exactly the same length as the mobo.
And yeah sure, I'll contact you if I sell this one but that all depends if the new cards get good reviews. I certainly won't be spending 30k for 10-20% performance boost. It would make more sense to crossfire this one instead if that turns out to be the case.
Btw are you thinking of crossfiring your 1GB card with my 2GB? Don't think it will work.

Re: Post your latest Purchase
It will work, although not recommended by AMD.
Actually any 69xx card can be used.
In any case, can sell my 1gb and get another 2gb also.
And regarding that length, the card is same as my 1gb version except the amount of RAM. So you can very well say goodbye to 6970 unlock.

Re: Post your latest Purchase
I never had any intention of unlocking it to a 6970 and risk damaging it in the first place. Besides the performance gain is meagre and not worth the risk. Many people who flashed their cards earlier to a 6970 are now beginning to report failed cards. This shows there are both short term and long terms effects of running the 6950 at 6970 timings, voltage and clocks.
The thing about crossfiring is, if you crossfire different versions of the same card, it will default to the lowest denominators of the two cards. Also VRAM doesn't add up while crossfiring (hope you know that). So 1GB+2GB will only give you 1GB.
Thanks

Re: Post your latest Purchase
1. Not exactly 6970 unlock but what about unlocking just the shaders? Although I do agree on that performance part. It's really not worth experimenting at this stage.
2. These days crossfire work at individual cards speed, shader count etc. That's the reason you can CFX different cards of the same family. So all the Cayman cards (6990, 6970, 6950) can be crossfired. Similarly all the Barts card can be crossfired (6870, 6850, 6790). Main thing is, the way prices of 2gb version has come down, I don't think manufacturers will be interested to keep the 1gb cards in the market for a long time. And who is going to miss 1gb extra RAM for some 500 bucks?
