Default When did Intel prices start giving competition to AMD?

OK, so I've not been following the developments very closely these days and have never followed Intel at all. Today my friend asked me to go to Chandni with him and I was there taking Quotations.

I got Intel Core i3 2100 with Intel motherboard for around 8-9k and AMD X4 645 with Gigabyte 880GM USB3L for 9.2k

For a minute I was shocked coz as far as I know, this i3 is at par with 645 as far as performance goes. I believe that with this motherboard, AMD would still beat the Intel in graphics performance. But still, I had never imagined that Intel would be in tough competition to AMD in this price bracket (sub 10k mobo-proccy combo).
And with graphics cards becoming increasingly common, graphics performance doesn't even matter that much
