TN fisherman killed as Lankan Navy opens fire, News - World - Mumbai Mirror
TN fisherman killed as Lankan Navy opens fire, News - World - Mumbai Mirror
Quote:
A Tamil Nadu fisherman was killed after Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire mid-sea, official sources said in Pudukottai today. Fisheries department officials said that three fishermen Pandian, Manikandan and Manivannan had left Jagadapattinnamener near here for fishing yesterday.
While they were fishing in the sea about 14 nautical miles from Jadapattinam, Sri Lankan Navy personnel, who were in a ship, allegedly fired indiscriminately at them.
While Pandian died on the spot, the two others escaped, they said.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government today said it has taken up with the Centre the issue of killing of a fisherman from the state by the Sri Lankan Navy and demanded strong action. Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin informed the state assembly that Chief Minister M Karunandihi has sent a telegram to the Centre in this regard and demanded strong action.
"We have been taking up the issue time and again with the Centre, which in turn had been taking it up with the Sri
Lankan government. The chief minister has sent a telegram to the Centre demanding strong action", he said while replying to points raised by opposition MLAs, including AIADMK and Congress, who sought to raise the issue through a special mention during zero hour.
Stalin said the kin of the victim Pandian has been given a compensation of Rs five lakh.
Earlier, D Jayakumar of AIADMK slammed the ruling DMK over the "continued killing" of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy in the past four years and asked "whether the state government will just stop with writing letters to the Centre or would take any action."
However, the Sri Lankan Navy was quick to come out with a denial.
Navy Spokesman Captain Athula Senaratna said there is no truth to Indian media reports of the Navy's involvement in the shooting incident close to the Tamil Nadu shore on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, reports said that the body of the fisherman, who was open fired at, has been kept at a government hospital in Pudukottai.

we hear similar stories coming in from west bengal, meghalaya, southern Assam etc about our soldiers and civilians being fired at by bangladeshi rifles!
we also hear stories coming in from Manipur, mizoram, nagaland, tripura etc about our soldiers and citizens being fired at by monkeys from burma!!
lets not talk abt the western and northen front here in this discussion ...
do u guys here think its fair that Indian govt keeps quite abt all this? jus raise a flag meeting and forget abt it... is it not time we hit back @ them and say ... **** off ... either u keep to urself or we mean business!!! do u think US or Russia wud keep quiet if something like this happens to their citizens ...
how can we dream of keeping China and Pak at bay when we cannot deal with small time monkeys ... China has already created its bases in burma and sri lanka ...
is there a platform from where Indian citizens like u n me can actually get things done instead of jus typing 1000 words like i am doing now....
plz do post ur views
i wanted a discussions instead of a news article ..hence posted here

IMO, that poll is seriously unecessary. Just because one behaves like an animal, doesn't mean we have to. There are ways to do things effectively and without such "colourful" ways of expressing violence. Besides, many will question media as well since it has lost credibility over the months for "TRP" and what not. I wouldn't be suprised if they are trying to sensationalize the issue. The last sentence did say reports say that he's in a govt. hospital. Most likely it could be a warning shot.
I am not dismissing it completely either, but your comment is a lol.

RIP.
As a side note, this poll is a joke. Such incidents should be tackled diplomatically, not by bringing war. I know it's sad to see some innocent person dying, but you are going over the top.
Secondly fisherman and other people should be made careful not to venture to foreign waters or land.

my uncle ( my only close relative who worked in the Indian Army) as an officer in the Short Service Commission (not sure if it is still called SSC).
he served for 2 years in the Kupware sector and for 3 years in the north east tackling insurgents. he doesnt talk much abt his life in the Army, but one thing he has told me is on several occasions he has lost his colleagues and on other occasions his team has been subjected to severe threat to life and limb becoz the Indian govt.'s policy of not using air power against militants and insurgents.
may i know the reason u asked this question?

Re: TN fisherman killed as Lankan Navy opens fire, News - World - Mumbai Mirror
actually this is a serious issue.... and any military operation will escalate the issue and our generals are already worrying about 2 front war and we cant even think of 3 front war at this point of time since pak and china has good relation with SL , so my suggestion will be
1: increase the Cost guard activity in those areas to support our fisherman
[i believe our cost guard i enough to tackle SL navy]
2: give awareness to fisherman about border in the sea , so that they should not reach SL ..
3: make a strong diplomatic pressure against SL for investigating abt incident..

well, talking of naxalites and NE insurgents, using the air force against them is like accepting that the problem has really become a pain in the arse (which it has) and you can't solve it diplomatically (which you really can't). You are anyways risking the lives of civilians. Let us alienate them more, should we?
Regarding Kashmir, the situation will go more ugly.
However being more assertive only through land would be good.
I asked the question because personally none of your opinion (and even mine) holds any water. The people who are working in the defense forces know much much better than any one of us.
