Guys if u have read today's mumbai mirror u would have seen on the front page news of a silent protest being carried out against all rickshaw and taxi drivers in the city. These guys have long been fleecing the public by manipulating meters. Recently they had gone on strike to demand an increase in a fare hike citing inflation, inspite of using cng, which is much cheaper. These guys have always been rude and inconsiderate to commuter's woes. You may have faced this many times, a cabbie refusing to go the destination of your choice. I usually avoid auto/taxi. Typically these people r rude to their customers. Buses in blore rocks.

Strange, hardly anyone manipulates meters in Mumbai, coz the public is pretty smart regarding tariffs Though I'll admit the hike in prices hurts the pocket

You telling me? I'm born-brought up in Bombay. I know. I'm well versed with the rates, and so far, tampering happened only once, 5 years ago, at 11.55PM, when the rickshaw guy said it's 12am, and that I'll have to pay up more (which, technically, isnt tampering)

It doesnt happen in town, western or central suburbs (taxi or rickshaw) Wonder how you faced this problem

Meter tampering happens in all cities in India including Mumbai
I'm not sure on which base u r saying meter tampering doesn't happen.

They tamper meter, tamper rate chart, night fare charge all....then they refuse to take u...

If I had a chance I would have preferred TMT (Thane bus service) any day but their buses doesn't run on my route...
And I'm bearing the autowallahs for last 3 yrs.

Dude, the issue is not with the tariff cards at all. U actually dont need a tariff card to calculate fares as there is a known formula to do so. It seems even after living in mumbai your whole life u are still very naive so as to believe that rickshawwalahs only cheat people with a wrong tariff card. Actually that's really stupid as no one would be dumb enough to fall for it. What u dont know is that these guys tamper with the meter itself, yes the meter which gives the readings. They meddle with these meters so as to show a higher reading. For eg, if the meter reading were to show 2.00 it actually means it's just 1.50. So the extra 0.5 on the meter is pocketed by these crooks. So do u now understand how these guys have been fleecing u all their life? It seems u have been paying extra for ur rickshaw ride all these years.

I know what tampering is, in Madras, it's rampant, differs by 20-30Rs in each rick, which is not the case here. I use BEST as far as possible, also carry a pass for trains too. But with ricks, maybe they are in unison with tampering, thats why it's rarely looked at.
