Default Re: 3D Cinemas and Shows

There are many types of 3D movies made, for watching on screen. The two most common in India are Polarized glasses (the ones with the same bluish or greenish tinge on the glasses), and Anaglyphic glasses (the ones with the cyan-magenta colouring). Science centres around the country show 3D with Polarized glasses, these are small 20-50 seater theatres, which have science or nature based shows between 20-30 minutes in length. In Mumbai, there is one at Nehru Science centre at Dadar. Another kind of 3D requires no glasses, and surround the field of view with a projection. The world's largest dome IMax is in Mumbai, and the world's largest IMax screen is at Hyderabad - unfortunately, there are too few IMax cameras for any good feature length movies in the native IMax format to be shot - so all we have are animations and documentaries.
However, because of the niche nature of such exhibits, 3D is no longer enough - was not enough for ten years or so. These installations are called 4D, 5D and 6D cinema. These are basically installations where the seats shake or jerk according to the visuals, water or smoke invades the room when necessary, and in some cases, the appropriate smells are released to the audience. These installations are temporary and show up at festivals and fairs, so you will have to watch out for it. Some permanent installations I know of are at amusement parks (Essel World, Mumbai) and movie parks (Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad).
Though this site is not for 3D movies per se, just check out http://3dindia.com/3d-india-club. The owner is a 3D enthusiast, and organises workshops that allow people to shoot in 3D using everyday equipment. Usually he is in the know if there is a 3D screening about.
