We all are different lot compared to the ordinary folks but then too we sometime fumble with none other than our field of specialization i.e Technology. Here I would like you to share all those technology goofups you made which make you laugh, those moments when you were troubleshooting too hard only to find the power cord out, those moments when a non-geek friend helped you in changing wallpaper on your XP system(Far-Fetched but could happen) etc. Don't shy, to err is human & as always we all were(or still are) n00bs.

Let me share one incident.
I happened to visit my friend house to check whether my CPU was working with his monitor since my monitor had developed some fault a few weeks ago. Once my checking was done, I plugged all the keyboard, mouse, monitor etc cables on the back panel of his PC & booted it. To my surprise & horror, the keyboard failed to work. Neither the mouse was. I replugged them but still they weren't working. At-last my friend removed them both & then I realised due to poor lightning conditions I had plugged the mouse in keyboard's port & vice-versa.

I was buying my new rig and I asked the vendor whether he had a bank a/c or not.

While trying to partition SDHC card from command line; (accidentally) I partitioned my HDD.

I burnt an old nvidia fx5200, din seat the HS properly after i had opened it
Burnt one 80gig ide HDD...dunno how
Burnt a CM500 PSU...i had just gotten it and there was a switch on the psu that was set to 110v, the american std voltage compared to 220v here...it exploded
broke a few pins on intel d965xbk (i think that was the model no.)
Burnt Ati hs3870x2...Twice, once it just burnt and the other time due to ocing
Burnt MSI X58 Eclipse mobo...faulty bios, it caught fire, started smoking.
Lightning strike burnt bsnl old modem
burnt Dlink Wireless router...didnt plug it in properly
Burnt 2 wireless cards...dunno how
spilt paint thinner on the plexi glass window of antec900 and ruined it

Lightning strike landed on your modem? That's fantastic! Do you have a Pic of if? BTW, you kept your modem in upstairs?

Plugged the telephone cable connecting to a Winmodem (Ambient HaM data Fax Voice) to Power Socket intead of telephone socker.

On my old p4:

Removed the HSF to clean it out. Saw the residual TIM...and thought "what the heck is this....the assembler left the packaging 'glue' on the HSF -- ****."

Cleaned the TIM really nicely..and put the HSF back on without TIM.

Basically did not know what TIM was back then...!..and cursed the assembled big time...!

Purchased WindowsXP for 200rs from local hardware dealer.
Inserted DDR Ram in a wrong way resulting in burning away.
Burned Few transistors in D101GGC, I don't know how i did it. But got replacement.
Purchased more than 15 PS2 titles without knowing that we can mod the console.
Hidden some stuff in Recycle Bin leading to my ultimate pwnage.

Just yesterday me and my friends were in my home and we were checking The Ap Eamcet site(engineering counseling) and my friend was trying to Login but it wasnt logging in for sum problem , in the site we had to enter hall ticket, reg code etc..
after sum time one of my freind told to enter the numbers from other side of keyboard(the right side) though keyboard waz working ,till then we were typing with top numerical keys dunno but the idea worked i waz outta my mind for a minute

Fortunately fdisk is a one trick Pony; it only partitions not formats. It just messed the GRUB. I rescued the system using a Live CD.

Phew! You were lucky.
One of my friend accidentally formatted a partition when he wanted to format his pendrive. He lost all the movies & music from that partition.
