Default Is Blu-Ray as a video storage format..........dying?

Hi everyone
I found a nice article on ZDNET which makes some compelling arguments on why blu-ray is doomed as a video storage format.

Read On........

BD is a video storage medium
And its getting popular day by day with AV philes, as evident from AV forums.
Even upwardly middle class are looking to feed their new HDTVs with 1080p that they are buying.

But a new format can quickly put blu-ray out of business in a few weeks.
Just look back into the history of IT and Hi-Tech

for BRDs to become mainstream, it needs to first become standardised as a storage medium, and be able to displace DVD from its current position and get priced at around Rs. 50 in India, compared to Rs. 15 DVDs.

The first step in this direction I see is that Debian Lenny would be offered in a Blu Ray DVD for each architecture, but other than that, I see hardly any reason people might be intrested in the highly expensive BRD format.

I think by the time Blu ray becomes mainstream, digital downloads will have already taken over. India of course will be stuck with DVDs for some time to come, being that we don't have HDTVs nor do we have high speed internet connections.

Blu ray screwed it up with it's content protection schemes.

MPAA is behind blu-ray. It will be a success. No second thought.

You guys do not get the point. This is about Blu-ray as a video format, not a storage medium. We will all be using Blu-ray as a storage medium in the future, like we make data DVDs now, but Blu-ray HD video? What the author is saying is that to become mainstream, the price of the format has to fall sufficiently to compete with DVDs, else they will just be a niche market. Go through the article and see the cost of replicating a blu-ray disc with license fees and all.

^^^

With Ps3 gaining popularity there will be nothing to stop Ps3 as a video storage format. Ps3 is one of the most affordable and best blu ray players out there.

Even with other stand alone players, Blu ray is gaining huge popularity.

Blu-ray is gaining popularity so soon the licensing and all will come down.

Yes, you meant BLU RAY movies , Original will always be Super Costly.
Now listen, if BD becomes popular storage medium and cheap and affordable then pirates will virtually kill the niche market of super costly blu-ray hd movies.

they are already at it, go see pirate bay

That's fine.
But at current prices, do you think it will really sell like DVDs ?? If so, prove your point.

Finally someone got the point. If you see the licensing fees in the article you'll get what I am trying to say.

And if you see the title of my post I said dying (present continuous) and not dead (past). If the crazy licensing scheme is made more reasonable it will compete with DVD.

1) What was the price of the very first ipod
2) What was the price of the very first DVD movie?
3) What was the price of the very first quad core processor from Intel?
4) What was the price of the very first HDTV?
5) What was the price of the very first cellphone?

The Bluray association fought a long war with HD-DVD group. They will charge a lot initially. After all they have to get all that lost money back (R&D, marketing, killing etc). Once the dust settles (which hasn't), you will get it for very cheap price.

How can a bluray media get widespread usage when HDTV's haven't become mainstream yet? How many homes in India are using HDTV?

Europe is the only region having widespread HD usage. Of course, they are filthy rich (after looting Asia and Africa). Even in USA, there are maybe 7-10 HD channels and 0 in asia.

Even in India, 90% have Standard Definition TVs. Bluray and HD will not become mainstream till that figure comes down to atleast 60% (I said this earlier).

So, at this point of time, there is no use fighting whether bluray will die or not.

It won't. Bluray association will not let it die.

how can it sell like DVD's? But believe me, bluray video format can be addictive. Once you start watching this HD stuff on a HDTV, you will never ever think of SD DVD. NEVER!!!

It is going to take some time. may be 2 years or 3 three. But it's a format that is going to take the media baton from DVD.
