ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
i think the veterans visit this sub-forum regularly, so i'm posting my query here!
Which is the more geekier subject: Electronics & Communication Engineering(ECE)/Electronics & TeleCommunication Engineering(ETE) or Computer Science & Engineering(CSE)???

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
Geekier? WTF?
What do you mean?
Choose what you like or what you are good at.

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
Well, i have read the syllabus of both and found that "Encryption" and "data coding" is not included in CSE, whereas it is in ECE. I love these stuffs! But, then again, i have not that much interests in Satellite communication compared to computers!
Can i learn these topics separately if i take CSE?

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
If it's not part of the syllabus, you cannot study it as part of the curriculum. You *may* get it as an elective in the final year (depends on the university).

What else do you know about ECE ? Core ECE is for hardcore electronic geeks and not for those who are planning a career outside the electronics field.
Are you planning a career in IT ? If yes then go for CSE otherwise if you have many other plans then you can choose CSE.
One thing is sure : even if you choose CSE then also you have to study some electronics subjects, because they are related.

processor architecture and related topics are included in both ECE and CSE, i guess? Initially, i'll join a company just to earn money, but i plan to indulge in R&D activity in the long term!

mate that's exactly what I wanna do.
heard of VLSI? (it's okay if you havnt, some 2nd year engineering students dont know too), well, thats what I plan to do.
FOr that, I have to choose either ECE or EEE, and under ECE electives you can do a bit programming too, if that satisfies your computer hunger.
But remember, in the end, do what you want to do, cuz you bloody hell will have to do that rest of your life (unless you become "another" IT professional, or "another" MBA degree holder)

well, i know what VLSI designing is, but it can be done later as a separate crash course also...it's an awesum topic btw!

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
Know that real VLSI designing is impossible without knowledge of electronics. If you really want to go that way, I suggest taking ECE or EEE.

There you go. That's why my options are ECE and EEE. I spoke to the professors wherever I get an opportunity. They say, grab ECE if you get it, then EEE as 2nd choice.

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
Well, under ECE you have electives in C++ and basic coding. If you want to be a white hat hacker, you can pursue it in a specialization course later on.
FOr processor architecture , VLSI is the key, and it's available under both ECE and EEE

Re: ECE/ETE vs. CSE!
^Even if it is, you will have a very hard time understanding VLSI as anything other than an ECE/EEE engineer.

Wait, what? I just studied those this sem, I'm in cse.
Afaik the difference between ece and cse is the communication engineering part(at least in wb), here ece students have to learn stuff like fm/am, telecommunication etc, cse students are more concerned with programming, ai, compiler designing, all cs related stuff.
I will say:
1. Want to become a proper software engineer, a black hat analyst, in IBM etc? Do cse, try to get a master degree from IIT.
2. Want to get a core government job, like through IES? Want to study vlsi? do ece.
3. Want to do research in fundamental electronics, vlsi etc, want to design processors, work in amd/intel(core development team) ? Do EE first, then get a master degree from IIT with microelectronics/vlsi and do a phd from abroad.
If you care to search wikipedia, you'll see that in abroad there is ee and cs, no special ece course as we are taught here. If you want to research in VLSI field go for ee.
If you go through some of the master processor designers in intel and amd or renaissance etc you would see most of them coming from an EE background.
If you read this page: Electrical engineering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
you'll see microelectronics, Telecommunications, Control engineering falling in EE, most foreign universities allow you to specialize in them.
However if you want to be a programmer then go for CSE, basic c++ that you read in ece will not help you with that, you need to learn some more serious stuff, like automata(extremely important), operating system, Artificial intelligence, cryptography, Computer architecture and engineering, web designing, all of these is included in cse syllabus(wb).

You are correct, c++ is there in 3-4th sem in most streams but c++ means nothing these days, I had studied it, the c++ that is taught to most streams are way too less, only after I studied java(and advanced java) I actually got a hold of OOP.

There is still a chance, do cse now, do mtech with embedded systems, iits offer embedded system specialization: Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi
And here's what embedded system stands for: Embedded system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You can work in hardware field if you want to, later you can do a phd from abroad.
PS: If you specialize and work with real time os/distributed systems you can develop supercomputers

its true that i'm confused now! bt regarding which college i might get!!! i'm sure that i'll choose CSE, but if i don't get CSE in Kolkata, then i'll opt for Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering and repeat WBJEE nxt year
what do u think?
