Default Buying a digital camera

Well, this isn't my birthday gift, but I need to buy one for home use now, budget is Rs 10k max & I have no idea what cameras are in the market & what should I look for.

I m looking for something like 4 MP Camera, 3x optical zoom atleast.....it would be better if more is available in 10k. Video recording will do but not a must....also tell me which memory card the model uses.

No brand loyalty, be it canon or Sony or Kodak. I guess all digi cams are supported as mass storage device anyway so they will work on any OS. Prosperity cables are a turn off....a simple USB/Mini-USB cable is more preferred.

I just looked at Sony DSC-W55 A bit out of budget, but feature set is extensive. How is this one? Any other recommendation

If you can somehow manage to get one for yourself from outside(Singapore,US etc) then get the Canon A570IS...awesome camera and it will fit your pocket too....

@ ankurgupta

can't import, so thats out of luck...

@ iMav

Hmm...need to think about Nikon's service here & ease of use.

Its for home use means my father & sister will use it even when i m not arround, so it has to be easy to manage & in lucknow we have service center for Sony, Samsung, Canon & I don't know about nikon.

Transfer to Vista is easy, i even do it now with ACDsee, just plug & import. Done...so that part is not a problem...i asked a friend too about canon, lets see

The image stabilization feature in a Sony cybershot is very poor except for the H series of big cameras.. The W series really sux.. My friend's bro-in-law was having it and is regretting buying it.. My Canon Ixus 60 without image stabilization takes much clearer pictures in motion..

u cant get 100% from any such non-DSLR cameras - for quality like as seen on skins.be, santabanta.com etc. u hav to make a hole in ur pocket by buying a DSLR camera - but mind u one thing - u forgot how to regret after buying that - Those big-daddy-of-all-cameras are extremely (mark my words - extremely) good and produce astonishing images - thousand times better than theez funky non-DSLR cameras
if interested den go ahead nd buy the lowest model - Nikon D(N)70 - it wud cost juz 24000 -
higher end models available too - gotta interested? - huh!!! - simply search google for more info
