Default Mobile Buying Guide: May 2013

    Mobile Buying Guide: May 2013

Buying a new mobile? All the info you'll ever need at your fingertips.

    IMPORTANT:
    • Mobiles are listed in alphabetical order and doesn't mean the first one is the best and last one the least desired.
    • Any mobile that is rebranded and sold through a local brand is excluded even if the same is manufactured by International company.
    • The database also has an integrated pricelist. Just click the mobile name and you'll be redirected to 91mobiles.com which have latest price offered by different online shops.
    • Whenever i see any major price change or mobile launches, i'll update this thread. So new month doesn't mean addition of new mobiles.
    • Mobile hardware coloured red is old/slow and not recommended at that price while green means better than expected quality.

Android Buyers Guide: Planning to get an Android mobile but confused between various options? Go through the 4 points below to know what to get and what to avoid:

    Display:
    1. Avoid any Android mobile with QVGA resolution (240X320) as most apps as well as games no longer support it.
    2. Avoid mobiles with odd resolution like (768X1024 or 600X1024) as it'll lead to same problem as above.
    3. Try to go for the mobile with highest PPI (pixel per inch) as lower PPI means blurry images and text.
    4. AMOLED/IPS doesn't mean that display will be better rather AMOLED means better black level whereas IPS means better viewing angle.
    5. Gorilla Glass is prone to scratches so a scratch guard is always recommended.

    Processor:
    1. Avoid any Android mobile with ARM11 processing core as those are no longer supported by majority of the apps or by Google itself.
    2. Clockspeed doesn't matter. You can get 1Ghz processor based Android for just 3k which mayn't even support the basic games.
    3. All Android mobile processor has a GPU integrated into the processor/chipset.
    4. Irrespective of mobile or manufacturer, if chipset is same then GPU will be same as well.
    5. Performance wise Cortex A5 < Scorpion < Cortex A7 < Cortex A9 < Krait < Cortex A15. Performance scales equally with increase in cores.

    Memory:
    1. To run smoothly Android mobile need 512MB or more ram depending on the display resolution and processor. Less ram means slowdown.
    2. You get roughly 50% free ram for use once your mobile boots up as GPU & Android system requires system ram.
    3. Rom memory is not same as internal memory. Rom memory is the total memory whereas the free memory is the internal memory.
    4. Mobiles with more than 5GB storage have multiple partition: apps memory (dedicated to apps) as well as user accessible memory.

    Battery:
    1. Check that the mobile ships with at least 1500mah battery else get ready to charge 2 times per day.
    2. Bigger display will require more battery so if screen size is 4.5"+ check that battery is more than 2000mah.
    3. AMOLED is a real battery saver so expect more battery backup.
    4. Try to avoid mobiles with integrated battery as if there is any kind of problem, turning off mobile can be a bit difficult.

    [OPTIONAL] Community support:
    1. Rooting, custom recovery or unofficial Android (custom rom) will break your warranty.
    2. Not all mobiles get same kind of community support so be sure (check XDA, Modaco or Android forum) if you care about custom roms.
    3. Android from Indian brands rarely get any kind of community support.

    Spec Summary:

    Mobiles Lowend Midrange Highend
    Price Below 15k Below 25k Above 25k
    Processor Cortex A5 dualcore/Cortex A9 dualcore Cortex A9/Scorpion dualcore Cortex A9 quadcore/Cortex A15/Krait dualcore
    Ram 512MB 1GB 1GB+
Display WVGA/FWVGA resolution, 200+ ppi qHD/HD resolution, 250+ ppi HD resolution, 300+ ppi
    Internal Memory 1GB+ 5GB+ 15GB+

Added Notes: If you want extra stuff like camera with HD video recording or front facing camera or latest Android, check it yourself. My guide covers almost everything.

You saved me the trouble to make a thread for the best Android around Rs. 14k.
    I have a shortlist now!

An effort like this can't be awarded with a "thank".

But thanks anyway...!! Thanks for this new year gift...

    Nice compilation SAM good work

just found 2 corrections under 15-20k section
    1. Defy+ screen resolution is 480X854 and not 480x584 as written there.
    2. u have named both sections as android smartphone, one should be non-android

    Great work Sam. Some points-

    1) In 15-20K section, you've written Non-Andriod section as "Andriod"

    2) What about adding a column for internal memory, especially in sub 20k section as they do matter.

    3) In second line from top- spelling of PRICELIST.

    4) One more suggestion of picking 1 or 2 better phones as suggestions in each section. You can take members help who own them.

    5) A section of info about mobile processors, chipsets, and graphics would help users a lot.!

That one is for a friend/colleague, who maybe secretly hate his Symbian whenever he see my Android!!

    (no offence to Symbian users...)

    1. corrected.
    2. its there for Android mobiles in sub 20k. for the non-Android mobiles, this doesn't really matter i think. i'll check into this.
    3. thanks. was a typo.
    4. initially i too thought same. but some may ask why i gave preference to one & ignore the other. so i gave a note at the end of each section which describes in simple language what you need to look at when buying a mobile within that budget.
    5. yes. that is a nice idea. will surely do some research & add it in coming days. thanks for the tip

this is specially true for the old Symbian S60s. those can't be compared to Androids at all. even the dumb OS, BADA (no offence to Samsung Wave owners but BADA 1.* is crap) outmatch & outclasses them in looks & usability. Symbian Anna & then Belle has reduced the gap but still lot has to be done.

i will post regularly (but lately). rooting & installing custom rom is fun & easy. just read the important guidelines given in their respective thread. try something random & you may make the mobile unresponsive or at most need to reinstall the rom again.

not possible. every mobile have many roms. some have rom in hundreds. then add overclock & you are looking at around 100 different configurations per mobile. also quadrant will always be high for custom rom even for slower mobiles. have seen Galaxy5 score around 1.5k in quadrant. outmatching almost all highend mobiles with stock rom.

^ A simple Google search could have saved you a lot of embarrassment!
But if you got genuinely failed in search attempts, here is the app, which is in question here...
    https://market.android.com/details?i...standard&hl=en

It's a benchmarking app, which gauges the capabilities of your android phone, with respect to other phones.

^Well I don't feel embarassed to ask anything upto some limit. And firstly I was too lazy to search Also I guesses it to be something like that (it was clear from above convo), but just wanted to be sure.

No hard feeling dude.. just felt like a little trolling.. thats all...

Btw, @Sam: I am finding Motorola Defy to be a good phone for my friend, as long as he doesn't have that "brand" mania. (He says he don't like "Motorola" and that he have used "Motorola Phones", don't know how to remove the mania from him).

Just wanted to confirm one thing. Does Motorola Defy really have 1.3 Gb as internal memory? Cause, GSMArena says it has 2 GB!

next option he'll consider is Galaxy Ace. show him the chart of 10-15k mobile. specially ram. moreover Defy have 2 times the resolution of Ace. if not Defy, Xperia Mini Pro can be brought from letsbuy for just 13.2k after applying coupon code.
