If my budget allowed me to spend some more then I would purchase Motorola droid x.
It fits my needs perfectly well but a bit expensive according to my budget.

Where did you see Droid X?! Isn't that a CDMA phone?

X10 is on old Android version (cam is nice though i recon).
Desire is *kinda* outdated hardware tech wise (applies to X10 too).

+1 for Galaxy S! Best in class hardware (screen is to die for!), the GPU is also awesome! Be aware that there are a few hiccups with stock firmware. Later firmware are smooth!

But Droid X can also be an interesting choice! More details please!

45 days? Later this september HTC,Samsung and SE are planning to show off their best in line for 2011. (PSPhone +X-next) for SE, Desire HD for HTC, no idea about samsung though. Dont waste your money now.Save and buy one in December.

Btw, the Galaxy S is all about specs.Outright performance is worse than any Android phone in the market. Skewed Benchmarks dont tell the real story. Dont go by hardware specs. Samsungs software implementation is pathetic and not to mention conspiracy theories on "de-warrantizing" your phones. I dont see why samsung dont have a proper update service like SE and Nokia. So unless you are pretty much into roting and stuff, the Samsung GS is a PITA. You are free to take me as a troll like a few here, but its a fact.

The X10 is geting 2.1 in a couple of weeks and 2.2 in December. 384 mb ram is enough torun all your applications. Like Paul o brian says "Unused Ram is wasted ram" . But if you prefer going for the updates, go for the Desire.

OR you can wait for an official firmware update! There has already been one official update for the SGS in India, and that HAS fixed quote a bit of issues! Looking at current beta firmware, I can assure you, all lags are gone! So the next update (in 2-4 weeks I think) WILL iron out all problems

I'm not suggesting any particular model or make here; but if you want to buy an Android phone now then you better get one with 512MB of RAM else you will be stuck on Froyo forever. Gingerbread requires at least 512MB of RAM else there is no "official" way to get the later Android updates.

HTC Desire... All the way.... 576 MB of RAM, beautiful interface (stock) and very responsive. I personally would not even consider X10 as an option . It has an absolutely horrid custom UI. So does SGS. Droid I am not sure. but if you are talking about the XT720 then I think its a good phone.

But given everything, I would recommend you go for HTC Desire.

@infra_red_dude- Speculations.Gingerbread doesnt have any official specs-required out yet. Everything on the net is pure speculation. Anyways, the present generation of phones wont be getting Gingerbread anyway owing to certain terms which isnt possible to implement on pre-existing phones.

@kalpik- Nice to know. But KIES is absolutely horrid and unless you are born with a barrage full of luck the SGS wont connect to the PC through KIES.

Yeah, KIES is a piece of crap, no doubt about that.. I do know some tricks to make it connect, but I agree, it should work out of the box.. Btw, they are fixing KIES issues too in the froyo update.. Apparently most of the connection issues are due to some weird filenames on the internal sdcard.. Delete em, and it connects right away! But yeah, KIES sucks

To keep it short, disregard Xperia x10,Droid X (Not officially released AFAIK,so no warranty + CDMA phone), HD2 (HD2 won't be having any win 7 updates) .

HTC Desire for 24 K (Again, is it from grey market/unofficial?. Because, the lowest I've heard is around 27k?) seems to be a very good VFM!!

It has 3.7" SLCD screen, which would make it v.good for one-thumb operations, without compromising on display size. (Provided it is the official one, then hopefully some tint issues which the AMOLED had, has been sorted). However, the sound quality seems to be pathetic compared to others, plus the camera is not that good.

Also, HTC sense, good keyboard, good internet phone...

Galaxy S has an extremely vibrant screen. Two major issues are:
---Lots of lag, which mostly has been dealt with in the recent firmware updates and hopefully will be completely resolved by the froyo update.

---GPS fixing issue, which AFAIK has to be resolved. (though unofficial fixes are already there)

-No flash in camera (though, camera otherwise is really good, esp. its video recording).

-Some say, plastic in the back, means lower build quality though it is debatable. (and looks horrible).

In short, Galaxy S isn't worth 4k more, unless you really want v.good music playback quality and multiple video playback support. (supports a ton of video formats)

Both suck in after sales service.. If you need divx, go for galaxy s.. Divx along with super amoled is a deadly combo!

Yaah I too think Samsung GalaxyS is better technology wise...its problem will surely get fixed in future updates
Inbuilt divx, best 4" screen, great gameplay and bluetooth 3 r some of the differentiating factors.
BTW both r getting 2.2 soon
