Guys, I'm looking for a Laptop which will be doing basic stuff right now but going to become my Desktop replacement by next July. Right now won't use it much but later gonna eat, sleep,$hit with it on my lap. Want it be capable of playing HD content and GTA 4. Yup that's the one that's gonna grace my Laptop with its benign presence. I'm planning to get it through KMD, if the price is right, that is. here's the link of the 2 that I've shortlisted at newegg. My budget is 60K.

Looks I need to make myself more clear. As u can see from the specs, I want:

Processor of or above 2GHz frequency, preferrably Core2Duo
At least 3GB of RAM
A DX10 capable dedicated GPU
160-250GB of HDD space at max.
Should be capable of at least 720P

Now u guys can help me better, I suppose. http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj44/visio159/Unismilies/35.png

get dell studio hen, or check for sony or HP. most of these have less choice in gfx n all specs overall. Damn when will HP let build laptops similar to Dell.

Friends,People and Foru-m-en,
Take a look at the config below and tell me is it worth 65K, that's the price KMD has quoted.
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400(2.26GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 4GB Memory 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS
The GPU has 1GB of its own dedicated memory !

Dell Studio 17 is perfect for you. Its 17", meaning BIG, as in desktop replacement. And you get Radeon HD3650 DirectX 10.1 capable card which is quite worthy enough to play crysis. You can upgrade CPU to T8100 for gaming. And you get all those value added extra features like finger print scanner, highr resolution, backlit keyboard, etc as upgrades.

Before I place the order just wanna know 2 things, with the small screen size of 15.4" and 17" will the difference between 720P and1080P(in case of Dell Studio 17) is gonna be much noticeable or not? Lastly out of the 2 which one is better 9600M GS or HD3650 coz remember this that the laptop with 9600M GS has max res. of 1280x800 whilst if I go for Dell Studio 17 then the screen will be Full HD. The games then would be played at their max. BUT I don't intend to play that much on the Laptop just few games like GTA 4, Mass Effect, PoP,NFS-Undercover etc NO CRYSIS !

Yes the difference will be noticeable.(720p vs. 1080p)
And yes ... Dell Studio 17 is full HD.

HD 3650 is comparable to 8600GT ... And the 'm' versions of both would be less performing ...But 9600m GS should be the clear winner.

I would go with the NewEgg one .... If gaming is my priority.
And Dell Studio 17 ... For all round entertainment .. (HD 3650 wouldn't disappoint .... U still will be able to play the mentioned games)http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj44/visio159/Unismilies/8.png

Get ASUS if you want gaming. ASUS ftw..... for gaming :).

the resolution is not due to graphic card but due to screen max resolution support.
and as per my thinking 1280x800 is good for 15.4 screen. 1400x900 will be very small.
1600x1050 unusable.

Get 17 inch screen and then u can say 1600 is some good.

720p is good on 1280x800 res, but for full HD u wud need 17 inch or more screen sized laptop. Oh I had forgotten something, laptops and the GPU for them mostly come with dual monitor support, so if u got any HD content and wanna see it. just attach a HD capable screen and move ur movie to see onto it. putting money in 17 inch lappy for ultra gaming is foolishness whoever negates me is a fool, but 17 inch for lil bigger n better screen. using laptop for such use is not much of a good idea, first it is so compact and making it overheated not much of good idea.

So last final words, go for the Asus one as:

Its got Raw muscle to eat everything that I'll probably throw at it.
Screen's good as is capable of 720P.
GPU is awesome too just don't know yet what type of 1GB memory does it has, VRAM or DDR2 or DDR3?
Great Price to performance ratio.

Any more Pros u wanna outline please do it and if any flaws u r willing to point out in this machine please do that too,Pronto.

# GPU is awesome too just don't know yet what type of 1GB memory does it has, VRAM or DDR2 or DDR3?

i think it is VRAM DDR2 according to asus website here (http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=132&l3=672&l4=0&model=2383&modelmenu=2).

dont know why they omit to mention this info.

Well its final that I'll go for the Asus one, just waiting for a green signal or u can say waiting for the greens from my folks. Although i can buy it on my own but thten that would eliminate my whole upgrade money saved by me so I'm just gonna pester my dad for it and sooner or later he's gonna crack up. http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj44/visio159/Unismilies/103.png

buy it from india ... dell studio....

buy the US one only if u plan to use ur laptop as desktop replacement...which is not the case i suppse..coz u referred to a desktop upgrade....

if ur laptop is gonna be ur no1 then i suggest plont more money into it buy a very good one...coz this config u say will be purely updated in 6 months literally...coz of all the architecture changes that will be coming...come 2009 mid..u will be heart broken...

again if laptop is ur top prio..i suggest invest some more money into it....buy the best possible u can...

or the one is quite sufficient in todays terms....but hey a xps from india for 55k can do these things also very well...

just my tuppeny

HD3650 is quite good actually. DONT compare it EVER with 8600GT. Its much MUCH better and has directx 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1 support, something which those flopped 8600m GTs can never have.

And 9600GS is faster by maximum 25% margin over HD3650, and even that, I have seen contradictions against in some reviews.

If you buy a Dell Studio 17 from US, like you are planning to buy that ASUS book, I am sure you would end up getting a much better deal since it can be coupled with a much stronger processor and all that for a much cheaper price compared to that in India.
