I installed banshee 1.2 but the application does not start from the menu . it shows 'Starting banshee.....' once I click on the link in the menu, but never actually starts. Older version (0.3) of banshee works fine on my machine.
Any suggestions

Try starting it from command line i.e. terminal. And post the errors.

It says banshee is not installed. And when I try to install it using apt-get it is fetching only the old version of banshee. But I want the latest version, 1.2.

Add the following repo in /etc/apt/sources.list and do an update and install the latest Banshee, i assume you are using hardy
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main
Also it might be good to delete .banshee folder from your home folder (i dont remember it might be in .gnome folder, just check it)
EDIT: Start BAnshee with banshee-1 from the terminal and use this How-To (http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94879)
