If you walk into a BestBuy this week you may spot some new software peeking out from the shelves. Yes, Ubuntu is now available as a spiffy boxed set in stores and on-line (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8888563&st=ubuntu&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1211587312374).
We’ve been working with ValuSoft (http://www.valusoft.com/) who are a distribution company that specialise in the US retail channel. The boxed set comes with an Ubuntu 8.04 CD, a Quick Start Guide and 60 days of support from the ValuSoft team, trained and backed by the Canonical support guys. The support covers installation and getting started using Ubuntu and is priced at $19.99.

Interesting . Other than the Support and book the contents are the same if I download it from the site correct? Assuming they won't go pay only in the future.

Yes I would think so. They are charging only for the media, book and support. Also, its one of Ubuntu's philosophies that it will always remain free.

A very good move. It must come with all audio/video codecs pre-installed so that every "era" "gera" can't not complaint about MP3 support :D

^^ Dude, there are legal issues involved in bundling codecs by default. So I dont really expect them to make it available on these copies.

No legal issue only royality issue, which they can cover by increasing price a lil bit

Increase the price but at least give some benefits that would make people buy it. The US has a$$ kicking internet, why would they want to buy it only for support. But again tehy are Americans.

Because Cannonical want to make it more idiot friendly :D Atleast now users would have someone to bash to take out their frustration

why would they want to buy it only for support.

That is the number 1 reason why they would want to buy it! And that is a BIG enough reason!

Are you trying to say that the community support is incapable of solving issues?

Are you trying to say that the community support is incapable of solving issues?

Not really. It is for people who cant and do not want to wait for someone to help them and want solution in minutes.

it is for ppl who are brain-washed to think that "Best Things DONT COME Free" :D so a price for the thing ,then they are happy ,we are happy :D

BTW ,I liked this on their page :
You're right in the middle of an important procedure when your computer freezes and crashes, erasing your data and costing you hours of extra work. For the thousandth time, you wish you had an easy-to-use alternative to your current operating system. Look no further than Ubuntu Linux, a community-developed, Linux-based operating system designed to give new life to your old PC or Mac.:p;):D:o:cool::smile:;-)

"new life to your old PC or Mac"
