ASUS Eee PC more or less created a market of cheap ultraportables. With its neat measurements and low weight it started a wave of "netbooks", and the low price was of course a big part of it all. Ironically, ASUS Eee PC is probably one of the most costly projects for the modders, because many have taken it upon themselves to fit the Eee with a lot more features and functions than it had to boot. Everything from GPS receiver to additional USB ports and a modem. A new kind of Eee mod has surfaced and this time it's the 8.9" display that gets an overhaul. Over at JKKmobile (http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/07/asus-eee-pc-900-with-touch-screen.html) they've namely equipped ASUS Eee PC 900 with a touch screen, which makes it possible to navigate directly on the screen using your fingers.

They haven't replaced the display, but only attached a 1mm thin touch panel on top of it and then hidden the control unit inside of the computer. They've also posted a number of pictures of the mod along with a video which clearly shows how the mod works.

A touchscreen panel like this one seems to cost around $60 on eBay, and it does seem like a fairly easy mod to do. That is if you're ready to break warranty.

Yes, but 8.9 touch panels are not available in the market yet AFAIK! Also I will be getting it from one of the sellers on ebay.

There are two options - buy the old one and solder it or buy the new ones specifically designed for EEE 701 which need no soldering at all :D

Yep. And the second option is great. AFAIK till March, there were no no_soldering_reqd panels available.

How EASY is it to do? If it is fairly easy. I'll do it. And I hope the EEE wont look like a demolished robo from the Terminator 3 after I do that. :D
How about the finish after I do it?

If you buy the solderless panels from fido-dido or kiddshop, they perfectly fit the outer shell of EEEs display. In any case, you have to make sure the width of the panel is not more than 1.4 mm, otherwise there will be a small bulge on top of the screen.

^ Do you have a kit? How much does the cheapest but good kit cost?

Kenshin

I don't have a kit as such, I use the soldering iron from Soldron(good constant temperature and stable), and tips from the same company(the tiny pointed ones), and a good quality 60/40 solder...works great. I got the *best soldering* prize in college with this combo :D

Soldron iron --> bout 130 bucks
Solder wire --> bout 25 bucks
Separate tips --> 35 bucks each

u'll get all these at lamington road.
And if u need any ics get them from CIRKIT and CHIP
those ppl at vega/visha kits loot people.
