Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS™, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.Take that Android and Iphone..now finally nokia will have a touchscreen, thanx to SE's UIQ. lol.
great move..will bring on a revolution. But devices to be announced early 2009.But this gives SE a huge edge over all the manufacturers IMO..SE shall continue with its java A300 platform and continue to produce devices with the WM and symbain benchmark.

I guess it was a long thot process by Nokia. First get Qt, then Symbian...at least that way Nokia has some solid stuff in its hand to compete and survive in the market in case the market is taken over by something bigger.

And i think that more and more viruses will be written for the mobile phones as their OS is one!! I liked SE for its faultless OS, and now that too will have its share of viruses.. I was going for SE K790i in few weeks (as soon as i'm able to walk after recovering from fractured leg), but now I guess I'll buy MotoRokr (for Linux) or wait for iPhone. Any guesses how much will iPhone cost me with Airtel in Himachal Pradesh?

^^^ They are uniting doesn't mean all the phones will haf Symbian! Just that all the smartphones will haf the same OS. You can safely but K790i or MotoRokr as they won't be affected in anyway.

Yea..it doesnt mean that..only we wont see any UIQ phones by SE anymore...maybe one or two..but now the XPERIA series will host both WM and symbian platforms..it will be tough on the customers now..all phones will function the same and have the same damn OS..well..everything has its downsides tho..

^^^for ur kind info SE has a good OS in UIQ itself..It has a better UI than any nokia phone out there..and it also has touchscreen..the only touchscreen phone nokia had was the 7710 and it was UIQ..got it??
android seems buggy acc.to reports.
Arre baba, give it some time..It should be ok by release..
Nokia is surely feeling threatened by the overwhelming success of iphone and also the promise shown by android..Time to pull up its socks!
I remember the not-so-funny comment made by a Nokia guy regarding iphone sales..Wonder what they are thinking now ;)

iphone -it cannot be believed.it is from apple.anytime they will lock out 3rd party software support.besides it got a puny 2MP camera.
^^They may do it..But what is the community there for ? ;) Also I am talking about the software platform and not the phone itself :)

but what I read just now is ,that developers of googles very own android is complaining about the buggy codes which are very basic and the feedbacks are not properly received by google. so much for the name google
^^ Oh I see..Lets hope the end-product turns out to be good..Also this tie-up may lead to a better UI experience for end-users..Time will tell!

Yay!
Nice to see that the market leader of the mobile world (Nokia) is not interested in being a dirty monopolist like the market leader of the PC OS world (you know who). Whether Android or Symbian wins doesn't matter to me now. Anyway, both with be open-source platforms for the mobile world ensuring good amount of competition and innovation. As long as the two restrict iPhone and its jail like software platform to the niche area of the market.

^ Yea and Trolltech was involved in LiMo. They are trying to bring it all together to create a mega platform to beat Android.
Amd, the 7710 had a modded version of UIQ (s90) which IMO was better than the SE UIQ fones of that time.

^^but it was an UIQ.and dont tell that dude..the P800 and the P910 were bestsellers during their time..The p990 was a complete sellout..the P1i however couldnt really live up to the expectations...Let's see what happens..If android hits the maret, the greatest loser would be nokia.with 100% stakes in symbian, nokia has to go for broke now...

Nokia opens up Symbian to compete against Google Android (http://www.i4u.com/article18376.html)
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform.
To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation.
To make Symbian a royalty-free open platform is a smart, possibly the only move to give Symbian a chance in the future. Symbian is here to stay for a while because of the huge install base on mobile phones. I said though before that mobile operating systems without a Desktop life are a dying bread. Users want one eco system as data exchange becomes more seemless and easier. You can already choose between Microsoft, Apple and Linux.
To make Symbian open is of course a direct hit in the direction of Google Android. Android hit some delays as reported yesterday. The Nokia Symbian announcement is another issue Google has to deal with.
Besides Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DoCoMo, AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone are planning to establish the Symbian Foundation.
The Symiban Foundation is expected to start operating during the first half of 2009, subject to the closing of the acquisition of Symbian Ltd by Nokia.
Via the Symbian Foundation site.
bad day for google i guess. first they get sued (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/208137/google-sued-over-migration-tool.html) and now this

^^yes but that does othing but undermine the value of symbian..after using phones like the n70 and the n72 people have been seen fleeing from the platform more often than not.
Actually its a win-win situation for SE and Moto here.If the whole new symbian thing does not do well. Its curtains for Nokia.but SE has its feature phones parallely runnig with the UIQ series and WinMo.So if android does well.i dont think SE will be too hesitant to part platforms and move to Android.Nokia on the other hand are shelling out huge money to gain trumps over the Mac OS, WinMo and the Android.
Irony is that..SE is contributing to a platform which will be a direct competitor to its XPERIA serie phones.

This whole collab thing has gone over my head. I think I'll need to read a few more article before commenting anything.
BTW 7710 did not have UIQ. It had Symbian Series 90 OS which is completely different from UIQ.

nokia saves SE??are you kiddin me??
The whole thing about this merger was to enable nokia bring out a touchscreen phone which shall be a direct competitior against the apple iphone and the Android OS.Nokia which has not been able to make a touch screen phone yet, needs UIQ to stand up to the future market. So its actually the other way round.
And well..Se was not dependent on its smartphons for their share anyway..

now in this
the competition will be in between google and nokia making ground for SE and MOTO to rise high.
But that's for sure now symbian phones will soon be available for 5 k in the market.
According to me google will face some problems in the beginning as of shortage of apps but will soon sue nokia smartphones as for me google is internet god

^^I am using AT&T Tilt a.k.a HTC Kaiser/TyTn2. There is already a Android repository available (and getting updated every day) and some ingenuous guys over at XDA-devs actually was able to compile the code into a working Android OS, which is able to run on Windows Mobile... till now they have been able to get the Touchscreen working, the phone keys working, quite a few apps working.. but they are currently on their way to port a phone radio onto kaiser, after which it will be able to make and receive calls. Apart from that, the OS is working fine. Android is sleek and extremely fast. :) :)
