Hi All

I have just successfully switched to Debian Lenny from Ubuntu hardy.
Its taking a while to getting used to, but I hope I learn soon.
I thought I may ask some questions about debian here.

Here is my diary about the Debian install:

This installer is too damn easy to use. Its fun. W00t! install completed.
GRUB looks better than in ubuntu. WTH is this only 5 seconds wait time ?

WTF ? Login in text mode ? K no problem.
Guess KDE is not installed
sudo apt-get install KDE
sudo command not found
hehehe even sudo is not installed by default
time to leave
hard reboot via restart button
lets try single user mode
WTF ? I forgot my password
Woops. I guess I didn't forget the password after all. It was just slightly lengthened.
apt-get install sudo
thats better
apt-get install kde
insert CD ?
ok fine. here you go
inserted CD
darn, I think the net is too slow
15kbps download speed for 2280kb
rest from CD
this install is boring
let me play guitar a bit
w00t! install finished
exit
yay! KDM!
omgwtf ? kstartupconfig not installed it says when I log in
time to go back to root mode
apt-get install kstartupconfig
package does not exist
damn you
time to go to sleep. will worry later
so it turns out I don't have permission to view my own home folder
reboot, go to windows mode, safe mode with networking
find out the darn command for loading the list
#think-digit @ chat.freenode.net

QwertyM: I don't help distro hoppers and windows users unless I am bored
Me: fug you
aditya|movies: chown gautham /home/gautham -R
aditya|movies: chgrp users /home/gaytgan -R
Me: Thanks bro
reboot
yup problem fixed
time to configure debian
wait a sec, damn I lack sudo privilage
restart
google
visudo was the command this time

found I need to add gautham ALL = (ALL)ALL after a line root ALL = ALL(ALL)
ctrl+X to exit, Y to save

confirm my findings
go to #think-digit again
aditya|movies: useradd -G root gautham
me: you sure ? here is mine...
aditya|movies: whats visudo ?
me: guess I shall try both in that case
wow, editing worked
damn aditya's methord said user already exists
exit
haha I am a sudoer now
time to really mess with debian now
configuring is fun
I R 1337 themer
lemme make my own theme, because default configuration sucks
purple is good
wait a sec, net was slow because debian uses BSNL DNS by default. my mistake.
OpenDNS FTW !
Time to try out more stuff
I don't have a proper sources.list file
can someone get me a good one ?

is there anything out of ordinary there ? I will keep updating...

well, why not understand almost all packages of ubuntu is available in Debian?
repositories for debian?
http://www.debian-multimedia.org
http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian
http://www.rarewares.org/

these will be enough.
and remember I have seen with Kde installed, anyways you somehow need some gtk apps.so you already may have libgtk2 installed.no pain ,install synaptic.

I think you mistook debian :?:

well, I have installed kpackage by default and I need adept.

I remember Roberto's Rare Wares, but its for multimedia audio encoding, etc. why did you of all ppl install it ?(I definitely abused rarewares on windows)

anyway, after installing GTK2+, howmany libraries are needed for gnome ?

can I force install of Gnome 2.18 instead of 2.22 ? (2.22 is a white elephant)

and debian multimdia lists only stable packages.
can I use them for testing ?
are they latest ?

finally, can you get me the apt lines directly ?
I am having difficulty finding them.

Bump:

I am considering Sidux as an alternative instead of Debian Lenny.
Lenny for some reason looks like it was built in a hurry.
I don't have half the packages I guess I need.
Startup and shutdown time are blazingly fast.
The distro is also highly responsive.
But I am still not sure about many things here.

So I am considering Sidux. How fast is it compared to normal Debian ?

sidux is good.
debian multimedia or rarewares have testing and unstable repositories.check for yourself!

Thanks.
I am installing sidux in some more minutes.
I finished burning it.

I just saved Rs. 408/-, because I decided to stick with getting myself a blogger account instead of a hosting from Faizal(Cyrus_The_Virus) for this one year. So with luck, I can also buy myself some extra ram.

So I can expect a REAL performance boost in a few weeks If luck is still on my side.

Again, Prakash, can you please give me a copy of your kernel ? We both have the same configuration, so I think your customised kernel can do wonders for me.

my kernel?well it aint that customized, but sure used zen sources.even it may ask for dependency esp glibc and all.

If you want a good faster optimized kernel install 2.6.26-rc3-zen0-x0-core2-smp2 from rarewares.org.beware nvidia doesnt have support for 2.6.25+ kernels yet.but rarewares provides nvidia-kernel-2.6.26-rc3-zen0-x0-core2-smp2 .

OK, will try the rarewares kernel.
I don't give damn to nVidia because I am just another poor intel user.
Time to install Sidux. Perhaps I will do it tonight.
