dual os problem

hey guys i was using to os in my pc

1 ) Windows XP SP 2
2 ) Ubuntu 7.10


with my this configuration

AMD ATHLON 64 x 2 4200
ASUS M2N-MX
1 GB DDR 2 667 Mhz
320 GB WESTERN DIGITAL HDD
SONY DRU 170 AW DVD writer

two days ago suddenly my pc got hang for 5 to 10 times. it was not giving me any response.so i decided to reinstall the os.before that problem i installed windows XP first and then installed Ubuntu.


but when i reinstalled only windows xp i knew that now i won't be able to boot into Ubuntu.so guys my question is

( 1 ) is there any way to keep intact my second os when i reinstall
my first os

( 2 ) how can i reload my last setting after reinstalling the os



if this is possible it would be very helpful to dual os users.

your ubuntu is there intact.only thing is grub is overwritten by winblow$ MBR.
rescue grub(boot menu in linux).go to OSS section for more info.

dear it's too late for me that i hev formated the partition of UBUNTU.

Perform the following steps to keep the linux installation intact even after re-installing the windows:

1. Install windows xp in the primary partition
2. Install your favourite linux in a logical partition and choose not to install any bootloader
3. Download Grub4DOS and extract the file named grldr into the root folder of c drive (Considering c is your primary partition)
4. Create a text file named menu.lst with the bootcodes of your linux install and save it in root folder of c drive
5. Edit the windows xp boot.ini and append the following line
c:grldr="<name of the linux>"

Now, of you format the c drive and re-install xp, you can perform the steps 3,4 and 5 and boot into your linux install
