Your PC is not powerful enough to decode HD files...

Get a Core2Duo.

Check this: How to Play High Definition (HD) Movies? (http://ashwinr.com/2007/08/09/how-to-play-high-definition-hd-movies/)

I believe your PC CAN play HD videos. Did you try Core AVC?

You can check this http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/archive/2007/07/21/1046591.aspx

Though it speaks of Vista Media center, it applies to the Windows Media Player which is basically the primary player for any Windows version whether XP or Vista and hence applies.

Strict compliance may perhaps resolve your problem.I have gone by this dictum for my Vista Home premium.

There is only one player you will ever need to play every type of video, across any platform, it's called SMPlayer. I would say it's the no.1 video player ever. Try it.,

Thats MPlayer for you

They should have one of those 'Plays Everything' badges on it :p

Yes, it's a frontend for MPlayer but with far more features., for .e,g, it remembers where you left off the last playing file.

^I know , but too bad its based on Qt.
I'll just stick with Gnome-Mplayer (http://dekorte.homeip.net/download/gnome-mplayer/), though its less feature rich.

Its as light and simple as a ui for a player can get :p

the weird thing is that some of these files do play sometimes .. so i get the feeling that is might not be a hardware problem!

Disable antivirus/similar software? Try it, they can scan the big highdef files, causing lag big time.

Sorry for bumping into an old thread.I tried searching for similar thread but couldnt find any. I remember seeing a thread earlier which listed the configuration required to play HD stuff but now I'm unable to locate the thread.
Unable to play HD rips properly. There is no sync between audio and video.

Have a laptop with the following configuration:
Processor:Core2Duo 2.0 Ghz
RAM:3GB
Operating system :Windows Vista

Is there anything that I need to install. I'm Using VLC player. I feel the configuration is good enough to play HD stuff.

Get Media Player classic + CoreAVC (of even FFDshow) and it'll play videos just fine. Your config is good enough to play even 1080p videos.

Still I'm having the same problem. I'm able to hear the audio but no video in Media Player Classic. What could be the problem?

first of all dont relate HD with mkv... both are different things... HD is a standard for very high definition media (usually expressed in terms of 720p (pixels) and full HiDef i.e. 1080p) whereas .mkv is just a container format (similar to .avi). it contains video stream, audio stream and optionally a subtitle stream...

well coming to the point now... i think ur pc CAN play these videos. Just as mentioned by ppl above, install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.00 and u will be able to play them smoothly... i have lots of mkv files and they play flawlessly on my laptop and i use K-Lite mega codec pack.... if u have installed it and still get failure then uninstall it and reinstall again but make sure u choose "Lots of stuff" as profile option during the setup process... (Hint: this option is in the drop-down list box)
