Laptop - Unable to boot in windows vista

After login and before displaying of desktop the system gets hanged. I'm able to see the cursor on a blank screen.
we tried the following and failed...
1. Tried to boot the system using recovery tools provided by vista.
2. Tried to install XP. But it says... Insert a proper hard disk message
3. Tried to open it in safe mode and last remembered good config.

Can anyone provide help to solve this issue.

does the lappy hav a recovery partition.if yes then press F11 during to bootup for system recovery.
