genakal: State mulls legal options DH News Service, Bangalore/Chennai: Karnataka has decided to explore legal options in dealing with Tamil Nadu's recent move to launch drinking water and power generation projects at the disputed Hogenakal falls. Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao told reporters here on Wednesday that he had received a letter from his Tamil Nadu counterpart defending the launching of the controversial projects, saying that Tamil Nadu “had not violated any rules.” He said the TN chief secretary had further stated that the two projects had the Central government’s sanction and claiming in the letter “that the Hogenakal falls belongs to TN and not Karnataka.”
Mr Rao said the Karnataka government was seriously concerned with the issue and “We will take appropriate action in this regard after consulting legal experts.”
Both the states had agreed that Hogenakal falls is a disputed border area between the two and that the issue should be settled through a joint survey conducted by officials of both states and the Centre.
Karnataka is of the view that TN cannot take up any project unless the dispute is settled. Besides, it is demanding that the TN’s projects be kept on hold until the Cauvery river water sharing dispute between riparian states is resolved.
Yeddy sparks furore
Meanwhile, the visit of a BJP delegation from Karnataka led by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to Hogenakal on Sunday last to protest against the proposed projects, has not only put the Tamil Nadu BJP in an embarrassing position but also drawn flak from other parties, a Chennai report said.
Yeddyurappa asked the Tamil Nadu government to stop the drinking water project until a joint survey was conducted to resolve the territorial dispute.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said the project was meant to meet the drinking water needs of the people of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, and asked the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP to spell out its stand. In response, TN BJP chief L Ganesan said in Dharmapuri on Tuesday that the party would lead a team to Hogenakal and Dharmapuri and later brief Yeddyurappa.
He said the Karnataka BJP as well as Yeddyurappa were being misled by some vested interests who wanted to derive political mileage in view of the Assembly elections in that state.
We’ve lost Kolar: BJP
He said, “The agitation against Tamil Nadu over the issue is wrong. Already we have lost Kolar and other areas to Karnataka.”
Ganesan is believed to have advised Yeddyurappa against the proposed visit on the ground that any agitation on the issue would alienate the Tamil Nadu BJP in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.
Marumalarchi DMK leader Vaiko has accused Karunanidhi of not taking any interest on the Hogenakal issue like he has done on the Mullaperiyar issue with Kerala.
