Dump the default player and use MP3Player from Viking.

Yep you will notice slight change in volume if u switch to aac but not enough to fulfill what you want .
You better get new earphones which provide louder sounds , like the in-ear type ones or the very famous ep-630 .
I too am using it and find the volume twice to that of the normal nokia earphones .
if you dont want to get the new earphones .....
get Oggplay from http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net/
it has -24 to +24 db sound amplifying range (greater that any other symbian players) ...... you can only make the sound loud as far as it isn't distorted.....
but i would suggest to get rid of nokia earphones
Thanks

Yes getting a pair of noise cancelling earphones is recommended as well, not because they make music louder, but because they reduce surrounding noise and hence the music is heard clearly without the need of increasing the volume too high.
Using MP3Player won't cause any harm to the phone.

The sound does depends upon the modulating signal through the earphone , but even earphones have band pass filters or you can say perform louder in lower modulating signals .
