I have old p-3 866 256mb sdram, geforce fx 5200 pci.
This does not boot immediately i.e i boot say fedora7
it maybe goes to gui and stops.
I reboot it may go to login screen.
Then it might go to deesktop and stop there too.
I thought it was HDD prob so bought
a 160gb PATA :((
same prob on winxp install.
SO that means hdd excluded.
tried booting with one ram at a time ditto.
So where is the problem ??
Help!!
Atleast point to hardware prob.

Sounds like an SMPS problem, get it checked thoroughly by someone who has a good brain. I had to give mine twice before the fault was picked up.

well, 810 boards have been known to end lives that way. One of my friends had his 810 board damaged when he tried to DO NOTHING with it. I think its an overheating problem. First, check your power supply for defects. Then the motherboard. If the system is over 6 years old, I guess repair will be costlier than the system itself. Concider a new PC if there is no solution available.

I feel sad to chuck the whole thing like this.
And me don't think AT powersupply's are available.
Even P-3 ATX power supply would be difficult to get.
Inspite that if it is a mobo going south i guess i
will have to call it quits.
Thanks all for your help.

but you can always replace the board. A Sempron Proccy(1.6k) + via chipset mobo with onboard gfx(1.6k) + 1gig ram(0.8k) set will cost you just 4K. Still, it will be better than the old rig.
get it serviced ..... my frd suffers with same problem ..... clean dust in fans & rest of mb .... apply thermal paste 2 processor .... try defrag & scandisk ..... check ur os system files .........

I was of the same opinion that it was processor and heatsink related.
I went searching for thermal paste in pune....surprise nobody had it.
I got vague referals.
If it is heating problem it should also stop after working for long....
it does not stop after booting.
I think it is some capacitor.
If I keep it at grub prompt for 6-7min and boot it boots in 2 attempts.

Could you suggest some mobo for intel.
Even this mobo you suggest appears very low priced.
A m2nvm from asus would cost approx 3.5.
I had heard about intel procy like 2150, 2180 etc.
c2d would be expensive.
DG33TL is being offered for 7.5 k here.
did u try upgrading ur BIOS ?
faced a similar issue its due to procy and heatsink .... remove it clean it and plug it back in

Remove all external devices connected to system, and clean processor fan, SMPS fan. Also, make sure all fans are running smoothly.
