Shuttleworth urged to normalize Ubuntu branding Jan. 17, 2008

An open letter to Mark Shuttleworth urges the Ubuntu founder and leader to normalize branding around the popular open source distribution. "Given the already fragmented nature of Linux, why fragment a specific distribution unnecessarily?" writes embedded industry consultant and website publisher Rick Lehrbaum, on his DeviceGuru blog.

In his open letter, Lehrbaum suggests that Ubuntu could establish a stronger brand by doing away with sub-brands such as Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu. Instead, various "flavors" of Ubuntu could be styled as different "Editions" of Ubuntu itself, Lehrbaum suggests.

"I think it's critical to focus as much attention as possible on a single brand, Ubuntu, to maximize its adoption and success," Lehrbaum wrote.

Literally "stole" the words from my mouth!I just said the same here in this forum few days ago :D kde,xfce etc should be maintained by the communities!let the Ubuntu devels+community devels concentrate on Ubuntu(Gnome) refinement and more support for mobile,wireless drivers etc.

^a small step in the right direction :)!this brand changing is the first step to give kde,xfce team to develop their own distro staying with the basic ubuntu :)

I totally disagree with your statement prakash. Why give partial treatement to other Desktops?
So what to do, rename Ubuntu to Gubuntu and keep Ubuntu as an overall brand?

Who is to say, there isn't any rule or law to not give partial treatment, if they give it, so be it. Ubuntu has always favoured Gnome however you look at it and brand Ubuntu is Gnome Ubuntu and that isn't going to change.

OpenSUSE is going completely KDE4 with its next release, Slackware never had Gnome, so what are these? partial or impartial...

@mehulbed:Ubuntu is a Gnome distro,no doubt in that! like slackware or opensuse or pclinuxos or mepis -all kde centric distributions.

and worst of all,all these packages needs maintainers and dedicated work.with default Ubuntu,no confusions,just download and use.

Ubuntu needs lot of improvements and kde,xfce distros means Ubuntu community is wasting time for these distros that developers can be used in Ubuntu for more improvements.

Sidux or Mepis =superior non-buggy Kubuntu.so,why the pain?if any user wants kde to be installed,it can be apt-get installed from ubuntu repos;but there is NO need for these kubuntu,xubuntu things,this is a step backward for Ubuntu devels. :(

Like slackware fans maintaining custom Gnome packages like dropline Gnome etc,why dont kde guys get their own kde packages?why to corrupt the users by dividing into different desktop env by default?Gnome fits fine in Ubuntu.
Kubuntu is a useless Desktop with Kde force packed into a gtk+ ubuntu base.

Simply Mepis is what a "better Kubuntu" for Kde fans.even better Mepis with latest release shifted back to Debian core.

Personally Id love to see all distros work something out to combine resources and come out with one hell of a distro rather than the multitudes of distros with each of their own problems. Why in the world can't this happen?

Coz Linux is about choice.
Unlike windows which gives you something and you have to use it whether you like it or not.
Linux gives you the choice of using whatever you like , however you like it.
If you aren't happy with any of the present distro's , you can go ahead and make one for yourself.
It's this availability of options is what makes Linux appealing, At least to me.

Well my point was "Two heads are better than one." I mean instead of folks working on Kubuntu, Xubuntu, MediBuntu, Gobuntu , whateverbuntu Id rather have on distro with all these aspects in it and choose whichever I want. Not sure how technically feasible it would be though.

Most Ubuntu forks are community maintained.
And have emerged as people have different tastes.
Now making people having different goals and opinions in mind , work together, isn't going to help IMHO.

Id guess that would be right :( . However think of a distro that included the best features of possibly every distro out there . Now that would be definitely worth trying out :)

There is no "best" distro IMO.
The "best" is an opinion.
For some its Ubuntu, for me its Zenwalk,
And the best part is, all distro's are community oriented,
If many people want something added, it is.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu are available on the DVD. It's techincally infeasible to have it on the CD and monetarily infeasible to ship DVD's.

Really!!?? This is both a happy and sad news for me. Though I love the eyecandy of KDE, the bugs have bugged me a lot. I'm a gnome user now, on linux mint :D
