After logging in with the username and password, type "startx" for KDE to start.

Login as root or a user (if you made one during setup) and type
startx

always create a local user!never login as root.still, for fixing, press ctrl+alt+f1 and login as root in virtual terminal.then do a :
killall -9 kdm if kdm is used or killall -9 gdm
now try,below commands:
startx;startkde
if kde is installed u can login to ur session.else u have to make sure ur install is not corrupt.

i edit inittab file of fedora7 with slax live cd
and set default runlevel to 5. Now after booting
i get the GUI to login.
But when i enter root in the username and its
password i get error that

cannot start the session due to internal

when i press enter i get msg that

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out
yourself, this could mean thatthere is some installation problem or that
you may be out of diskspace. try logging in with one of the failsafe session
to see if you can fix this problem.

and when i clicked in details

error session_child_run: Could not exec /etc/x11/xnit/xsession default

but when checked it with live cd there is no
folder name x11 in /etc

press ctrl+alt+f2 and login as root.then post the o/p of below command here:
cat ~/.xsession-errors
and
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

also post the output of "df -H" command.
also,the o/p of
ls -ld /tmp

cat /etc/hosts

and possible causes range from xorg.conf error, partition being full,/tmp dir permission problem, wrong /etc/hosts file,/etc/passwd file etc.

also do run in virtual terminal:
chown root ~/.ICEauthority
also, do a:
rm -r ~/.gnome2/gnome-session or
rm -r ~/.gnome2/session
^restart computer then!

^^^ Always use your package manager wherever possible to install packages. Search for how to use yum.
