Flstudio is probably one of the best tool available. What photoshop is to photo and other artwork is flstudio is to music(when I started I used it only for trance but now instrumental also sounds good. Its much improved now). Its all about skill (be it flstudio or photoshop). But there are several tools that make it easy and more beautiful.

I will start off with snare and piano roll tools.

download samples.
Sample (http://www.geocities.com/palappuram1/pix/snare.zip)

Playing with snare:

1. Create new project. By default 4 samplers will be opened in the channel area. We need only snare now. Paint the sequence steps like this
http://www.geocities.com/palappuram1/pix/1.jpg

2.Right click on snare and open piano roll.
3.In the event selector select ch.vol.
4.Right click at the bottom end of the event editor and drag it to the top right.

Alternate way:

Skip step 4. Instead click on piano roll options (top left)>tools>LFO (event selector must be ch.vol)

5: select the wave form from shape. Adjust phase and edit start and end values

For snare1.wav enter these values.

More fun:

I)

1.From step 5 goto piano roll options>tools>quick chop ( this is useful for trance).

II)

1. From step 2. Goto piano roll options> tools> arpeggiator.
2. Click on patterns try 1 note, 2 notes etc. you will get different rythm.

III)

1. This one is resource hungry :( .From step 4 select piano roll options> tools> randomize . In patterns octave=0 range=2. You will get a roaring sea like effect (Why we need it when we can get better samplers ???)

IV) This one is gr8 :)

1. From step 2 open piano roll options> tools>quantize click on groove template and try different templates :)

PS: poor image quality. I'll make it better next time.
