View Full Version : AMD now worth less than it paid for ATI

AMD reached its lowest share price for more than four years last week and, as a result, its market value dropped to around US$5 billion – that's $400 million less than it paid for ATI in July 2006.
Intel, AMD’s major competitor in the CPU business, has been on a roll for the past 18 months and is now worth around US$162 billion, which makes the chip giant more than 32 times the size of AMD in monetary terms.
Even worse for AMD is that its partner-cum-archrival, Nvidia, has a market cap of around $19 billion, which makes it almost four times as valuable as the struggling platform company.
It’s fair to say things haven’t been going well for AMD since the middle of last year, as its two major rivals launched products that remain largely uncontested even today. Neither the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 nor the GeForce 8800 GTX have been truly surpassed in terms of performance yet and it’s not going to happen until next year.
There are no two ways about it: the Phenom launch was a disappointment. This was largely down to the fact that the company found an erratum in the L3 cache Translation Lookup Buffer, which could cause serious system instabilities in certain scenarios and it prevented the company from launching a 2.4GHz Phenom CPU at the eleventh. AMD issued a TLB fix to motherboard manufacturers to implement into their BIOSes and when the results for the TLB fix came out, it wasn’t pretty.
This wasn’t all that disappointed us about the Phenom launch though, as AMD also prevented all but a select few publications from running their own independent benchmarks on the new CPUs before the launch. I don’t think there was any malice in that choice personally, but it didn’t really help AMD’s street cred when, come launch day, reviews were few and far between.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, because I consider the Radeon HD 3800-series’ launch to have been a success, even though there is a shortage of hardware in the channel at the moment.
Let’s hope that AMD’s fortunes in 2008 change for the better because as an industry we need AMD to continue to innovate and deliver great choice to consumers. In recent times, we wouldn’t have had great products like the GeForce 8800 and Core 2, if it wasn' for AMD's forward-thinking innovations like the Athlon 64 and Radeon X1900-series, which were class leading products at their time of introduction (and continued to be class-leading for much of their lives).

I have AMD proccy in my home computer and i have absolutely no grief about it. It works nice and comes for nearly half the price of an Intel one. I wont buy Intel chips in future after what they have done with 915 graphics chip, about Vista drivers. At least they must recognize that they are where they are because of their customers. Yes technology advancement they make are worth, but not at 'any' cost.

yeah . . damn DRM is soon going to hit the proc . . so , am not selling my old comp :-). suddenly , old is becoming gold . . and then , come on AMD we need competition :-).

if DRM is implemented in each and everything in the "US" style, soon these monopolistic corporates are gonna lose everything. In software's M$ and in hardware companies like intel, amd & Co who want to implement DRM in processors itself :( now even hard disks by WD came with DRM.
Fsck this DMCA of USA.what fair user right?those who buy the hardware or software are the owners of it.completely=is called freedom.not some agreements like software giants does with EULA.no one care to read EULA just click, accept and go
I think Hollywood movie companies and their RIAA etc are intimidating these companies to enforce DRM on their Hardware.though with software-ie,windows Vista,it is M$ who jumped into to get a grip earlier,as these protagonists thinks they can enforce DRM on all users.
US is leading everything, there laws are not for common man,but for corporates like M$,Intel etc.wth?even EU is not prohibiting DRMed H/W and software!DRMed Music!DRMed Operating Systems(vista),DRMed Processor,harddisk,Blu-ray/HD-DVD players!
wow so much they have to offer for customers.they want to get more money and these corporates got hands on every government laws I think in USA :x

Apple Macs are powered by Intel. :| Slowly they'll phase out PPC proccy.
I'm happy that my cousin is going to a Toshiba Laptop powered by AMD! For the same cost (around $650) we get a better configuration than their Intel counterparts.
AMD/ATi, FTW!

It wont be AMD if you want El Jobso's computers, my boy!
And as for AMD going down, they have been made a right royal mess because of Phenom. I guess they should abandon the thing and restart from scratch. So just when ATI is able to set its house in order, now it is AMD in trouble.

Keeping Macs aside (I don't really care 'whats inside', it's a mac to me.), I do buy PC components now and then for the office. Recently I was going in for an Intel C2D, but I guess I'll buy an AMD for a change.
As for Praka and his DRM, I love it! At least one guy is willing to stand up against these DRMers. I bet you, in five years time, when everything is monopolised and DRM'ed, you guys will remember what the guy with the cat avatar said...
if guys can run os x on pc then drm KMA

Yeah goobi you said it :) and shantonu,DRM means not anti-ms,but anti-vista :D,it is some people who feels for it.afterall you or me are not the owners of these monopoly companies!.you may be working for them heh?
....and humans have this tendancy of worshipping nature powers like Lightning(which can struck!),snakes(which can bite!) etc, same theory goes with Monopolies like these companies who makes use of the same worship of power now known as fanboyism ";)" and in OS market it is Mycrosoft!.it is human to worship something fearful! :D
yeah...am not so good in expressing ideas in English.but hope ya all got it ;)

Come on Praka man, I am also anti DRM, I am with You, and I am against DRM everywhere not only in Vista or MS but in Apple, In multimedia, in ebooks and even in proprietary hardware. I support your anti DRM stand totally and I support open standards especially in hardware and gadgets!
I am not against a single company be it Apple or MS. I am against the murder of fair use that is done at the hands of these restrictive technologies.

I second that and I support Prakash!! This one has stood against DRM no matter what. Just look at all his posts hafing the word: DRM and look at the replies. Everyone (including me, once I guess) haf criticized him on that. But he continues his war against DRM!
In the near future when DRM infuses in our daily lives we'll remember Prakash and his posts for sure :) If that happens, believe me, digital life would be hell! We may now not know its significance but once its implemented everywhere (yes, it'll soon be for sure!) we'll end up searching for cracks/work arounds to make copies of our own media!!!
AMD was the probably the first to announce DRM'd procs. Lets see what happens and how AMD gets outta this mess! Phenom was a blunder. But seriously even Pentium4 was (mebbe not as big as Phenom)!! But it sold well coz of great marketting strategies of Intel.

thanks for the support you all! :) hope people understands!
well the only thing i have against jeshtha's drm protest is that he has been blaming vista as the 1 who is the cause and promoter of drm where as vista has no choice or rather MS has no choice but to play with board room politics ....
he has never blamed amd for their drm procy plans nor has he cursed intel for their plans its just vista and MS just coz they acted first .... and i feel the reason behind that i think is he knows for vista there is an alternative but for amd and intel there is none its either intel or amd and if they both choose drmed procy's u will to deal with it
so using drm as a tool for spreading anti-MS sentiments is what im against ;)

Well iMav technically Vista is not the first, It was Apple (who was forced in case of iTMS but case of the hardware DRM chip in their computers, I guess they did it earlier than MS)
ok in that case he is more wrong in cursing vista then :D

With the Core micro architecture, Intel has blown AMD off! AMD is in the same state now as it was when selling the K6 chips.
AMD needs to come up with something of the K7 potential before it can hit Intel back.

^^dude nobody likes DRM,not the artist whose work is DRMed and sold and not the buyers who has paid for it and still can't use it as he wishes. Its a mess, utter mess!.
And yea prakash,Im with ya DRM gotta dieboy.Keep protesting and let others know what you're talking about.Awareness is the key.
@iMav:M$ is shoving DRM up our ***** through vista and I don't know why,I mean it gains nothing from it IMO.It did that just to counterattack apple's 'fairplay' things, cos M$ wants to get into media selling\distributing market(which is very lucrative). Why did at all M$ intruduced drm thingy in Zune when players like sony and others were doing without it comfortably?Simple, they wanted to kick off their Zune marketplace and they wanted all the studios to channel their content through their marketplace. So it was like look We got DRM in Vista and DRM in Zune,so your content in safe and cannot be pirated(?).
Now this is complete BS.M$ is making the life of end users hell for their small desires.
and this not only against M$ but for everybody who supports DRM.
All day DRM DRM DRM, i dont know how many of us are actually have been affected with DRM till now
I have been affected.Don't ask me how.And soon enough you'll realize how bad it is(much sooner by looking at the no. of crazy companies working towards it).
the day some 1 shoves something up my *** im gonna fart on their face ;) MS has not shoved anything up me i am not affected by drm and am not gonna be for a very long time ;) and u have been affected by drm  ur talking abt the 3x3 .... can u tell me some other media player that allows u to transfer songs :?: and wtf are crying about u have the work around :)

^^
can u tell me some other media player that allows u to transfer songs and wtf are crying about u have the work around
I wasn't talking about the transfer thingy actually but about the drm in M$ marketplace.forget it.
Now read out bolded quote. Why the hell implement DRM thingy at all if there are work arounds available?Stripping off drm isn't tough\complex at all.
This is going highly offtopic now, methink we should stop it here.Anyways you gotta agree the concept of DRM is faulty. Its mess actually.
drm is courtesy music labels MS did not say that artists want it as iv said there closed door politics in such matters always ;) just coz a software can be pirated doesnt mean stop licensesing it :?
goobimama
11-12-2007, 11:01 PM
Just coz a software can be pirated doesn't mean stop licensing it
Since the software can be easily pirated, why do all the DRM thing? Just give out licenses, so that a ethical person will go ahead and buy that license. DRM is just bothersome to the customer. The average pirate doesn't even feel a thing...

11-12-2007, 11:10 PM
^^yep, try to make the life of genuine users easy rather than trying to make the life of 'pirates' uneasy cos all the efforts are useless. No matter what they do,there will be always better brains to find a work around.
The average pirate doesn't even feel a thing... that is exactly why im saying that there is no need of so much of a fuss ;) as long as there is something at the software level there is no need to worry as in case of the zune 3x3 or vista for that matter i can easily get amy winehouse's new album; kanye west's new album without any drm crap and drm wont be bothering a lot coz once something starts turning away customers (in this case music lovers from buying music not vista) music companies will start getting their heads together
for some flash back when napster ruled it was brought down what came after limewire - big bands like metallica if im not wrong went against napster and got the flack from the consumers what happened as a result .... napster died giving rise p2p and after that no label did anything coz they feared consumer back lash same way once drm starts pissing off more n more people sales will be affected and then there will always some 1 vieing for the number 1 spot and the ones for drm will have to choose whether keep the crown or move away
so relax .... drm wont do anything at the most some small hiccups but long live pirates ;)

What! Are you saying let the genuine users suffer? What kind of a cracked up attitude is that?
goobi ur getting it wrong my friend ... the genuine user wont be affected .... im not advocating drm but the thing drm only restricts re-production; re-recording; ripping of content and doesnt allow drm protected content to be played on non-signed hardware in other words it wont allow u to rip ur stuff or convert it u can use it in its original form on certified hardware so if ur paying for it and using it on proper hardware and not ripping it or recording it then u wont be affected
PS: the drm thing is an interesting read

Doesn't cause the genuine customer troubles? Are you serious? What about the WGA thing. The HDCP thing. The no custom ringtones in iPhone thing. The...well I could go on. But in all these cases, the pirates are almost not affected.
WGA kill switch - see as i said earlier once customers get affected then companies have little choice ... with sp1 kill switch killed (WGA otherwise is not an issue if ur using genuine windows ;))
iphone ringtones well curse ur el jobso :D
iv been reading about drm now and it seems .... well its taking the topic off-topic .... this is when we move to fight club (i find it better than chit-chat) :p

The media companies say that if they do not implement DRM , they would go out of business. Let us take a simple example! Books. They have been pirated since ages and it was as easy to pirate one as getting it xeroxed or if you had the time and passion you could simply copy it by hand. Book Publishers never implemented anything like DRM yet they are doing great business.
Look at Raj Comics. The company allows the yahoo group to share comics that are more than an year old. I had long since given up comics but when I came to that I grp my love for comics was reborn and now I purchase every single set they release.
Similarly with Moser Baer and TSeries sellng DVDs at affordable prices, I buy the original DVDs too. But I do not use them on the DVD player hoooked to my TV, I rip them to XVid and H.264 and copy the H.264 to my iPod and avi to pen drive which I plug into DVD player and all the people in my family can enjoy (It can support XVid files from pen drive) . In this way I have to use teh disc only once, the disc is safe, the lens is safe and I am happy that I paid for original stuff.
They do not use DRM, nor does Raj Comics do it.
I use them coz they allow me to do what I want with wat I paid for. They Do not bind me in DRM.
But with the coming of HW DRM this is not going to be possible. If AMD plans to implement HW DRM, I would like to see it dead. I would be satisfied with Intel monopoly instead of living in a competitive world locked with DRM where companies tell me wat I do with things that are mine.
intel and amd both have similar plans boy ;)
kumarmohit
12-12-2007, 01:29 AM
But as we know that if one goes out, the other will stop doing anything big, who knows!
Intel did try to bring a stand still once, they might do it again. While not a likely possibility, there still is a possibility;)

if they need to reduce piracy . . they need to cut the cost like what moser did . . since their dvds came i stopped buying pirated ones . . now i buy originals and i feel much happy about that company :-). i bought 10 dvds yest for 400 and something . if others can implement like this piracy will stop . but if they grow money oriented , then , am afraid piracy will continue .

Most of them except YRF (Yash Raj Films) have done it. YRF still sells DVDs of movie as yucky as Neal and Nikki at around 150 to 200. They are among the only few who have kept the prices artificially high.
