Ubuntu is free to everyone and Digit is providing DVD of that. What Canonical charges is for delivery and Media cost if you order a DVD or CD from them, that is.

Whoa! Virtually Every Antivirus, AntiSpyware, Drivers etc. DVD contents are quiet good though low on developer tools. VS 2008 Express Edition Final All in One DVD would have been of much more use. Anyways, Great content in both DVD and Mag.

The first time i opened the excel file in Openoffice it crashed.I read it after recovering it.

No, but when you mentioned "magazines" it should atleast look, feel and even weight like one. They are more like mini magazines that are given away free with the main one. You told us half truth, trying to make us believe you are giving more. ;) But your little trick could easily backfire.

Let's look at it from a different angle. A 40 page magazine shouldn't cost more than Rs 15 (magazines like Outlook and India Today which are much thicker cost only Rs 10).
So 5 magazines @ Rs 15 costs Rs 75.
5 DVDs @ Rs 10 costs Rs 50.
Rs 50 + Rs 75 = Rs 125
You are selling to us Rs 125 worth of stuff at Rs 200!!

Instead, if you had given a 200 pg mag and 5 DVDs, people would have thought, "Wow!! for only Rs 75 more we are getting a magazine 70pages thicker and 4 extra DVDs! Give me my copy."

Conclusion: Bad marketing trick. :))

Well, I have mentioned the price of blank DVDs as more than Rs.100/- each and Digit is giving 5 DL DVDs with around 40 GB of data on them,so, I just had to change one word in my sentence so that people understand it better, and here it goes:

Each mag is 40 to 50 pages with anywhere from 30 to 40 pages of pure content in each (ie. not counting ads).

Obviously we could have just made one rather thick 200+ page mag, but then it goes againt the theme we had in mind... eg.: If you're into gaming... read the gaming mag.

Each one is a collection of columns, articles, news, etc. based on that topic (Computing, Connect, Entertainment, Gaming, Personal Tech). Anyway, we want to know your opinions, but at least wait till you get the magazines and read them before offering your 2 cents ;)

Blackpearl, I dont think that you have ever checked out the price of a DL DVD. A Blank, good, DL DVD costs more than 100 bucks.


The DVDs Digit give aren't blank. These are pressed DVDs manufactured (replicated is the correct word) in bulk so the production cost is very low.

As of 2003, DVDs cost about $1,000 to master and about $0.70 to replicate. Double-sided or dual-layer discs cost about $0.30 more to replicate

That was 2003. Prices have come down a lot during these 4 years. If we consider the ratio of production cost to have remained the same then the replicating cost of DL DVDs are just about 42% more than that of single layer DVDs.

and FYKI, moser baer movies in Dual Layer DVDs with box, artwork cost only Rs.34/-. so the dual layer DVDs MUST COST BELOW RS 20 I always hope the movie disc is blank, so that I can enjoy my first blank DVD+DL
I wonder why Boser Baer does not sell them blank, as the stores would be emptied before a few days of launching them. only a fool won't sell something with that much revenue assoiated with it.

I got the issue today morning

The 5 DVDs come with some good software. I liked the Windows 2008 Server and Exchange Server 2007 trials.

The magazines are too slim. Ads are okay with me but the contents are too less. Its just almost the same number of pages as a regular issue. A single book would have been better

Unfortunately there is no Fast Track

The December 2006 issue of Fast Track is missing from the PDF.

Well DVD are ok ok and uselsess for me .. coz i hv bsnl broadband .. very helpful for others tough ! lets see !! how things go ..!!

And I thought you guys are really giving 5 Magazines !
But its just one Regular Digit magazine cut into 5 pieces !

Digit Magazine is usually 150 Pages
Now guys they are giving 5 magazines each or approximately 45 Pages
So that's 45*5=225 Pages !

and i thought i am getting atleats 100*5 = 500 Pages of superb content

And I dunno if it has happened to you guys or not but Success rate of chip DVDs for me is less that 30% but digit DVDs have worked flawlessly till now so no regrets.I am not saying this is true for all but this is what is my experience and I don't know why.Digit+pcworld dvds always work flawlessly for me.

I have been buying digit from the very begining since it started printing under its name. There has been many good & bad experiences since including some which kind of forced me to discontinue subscription & revert back to being an newsstand buyer.

Anyway, I just got the December issue of digit an hour ago, even before reading it I must say - In this issue, the package looks great on the showcase but it is pathetic in work.

The newsstand guy had to spend good 5 minutes with a knife to make it feasible for me to take the package home comfortably. After coming home another few minutes to remove those sticky cello tapes stuck all over each of the 5 sections & dvds. If digit wanted to make a attractive package for display they should have given ad. boards for display than making the whole thing so....

I am not a subscriber to my favorite magazine but since the past 4 years have never missed an issue that hit the newstands. The June and December edition are always special to me. I am bewildered today is 9th and there is no trace of Digit as of yet. As the excitement mounts to get Digit frustration is creeping in. I am from Chandannagore which is about 30 kms. away from Kolkata. Can someone tell me why this abnormal delay?

Linux can be installed in same way on SATA as it is on IDE. All latest distros work fine with SATA Disks

Shopkeeper won't replace it.
But you email DIGIT team, they'll replace it,free of cost.
They did it twice to me.

I especially liked the UBUNTU DVD
and all pdf's of Digit and Fasttrack...
Last year they had provided the pdf's for 2 years and each pdf had security restrictions..
That means u cannot copy the text ..
But this time no restrictions...:D:D:D
I will use my own software Presenmaker1.0 (http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74832) to read all the text for me :cool:

Bought the mag yesterday and gave the media a spin...
Mag's content is not at all worth reading.
Games mag has got reviews of upcoming games- better when compared to the other 4 mags.Same old tips on how to organise your media and what to do with your old pc's...Nothing new in the mag.
3movies...hahah..lol..should learn from digit how waste space by cramming in some worthless stuff.Only movie or videos that's different is SCENE-episodes.

Nice move digit.
Divided the entire mag into small ones..good..nice to hold and read.
It was very colorful..ya nearly all pages where very attractive and colorful.


And the DVD's are also fine...

But what brings all these xp down is ADS...

i was really started to think whether all the buyers guide article were written by be provider...
All the side pages nearly had big ads..may be thats why it was colorful :-D
And nearly half of the news are read and discussed in forum..especially the iphone- the invention of the year news...

Sorry to say guys, but by dividing the mag yöü have somehow covered the fact that yöü have reduced the no of pages in total..and in the way increased the no of ad..


I know its difficult without ad's but when ad's over take article and also when they are put right next to some exclusive articles like buyers guide,in gaming mag, it just reduces the credibility of your article and makes us think that were these article specifically tailor made to suite the ad's on the side page..

My humble request..
Enough of all the usual stuff guys , get dirty,..we need articles much more deeper,now yöü have got readers who are well versed with computer terms... So now give them what yöü got...post more like next level of computing ,how they work,etc..
If yöü dont yöü are sure to loose your hardcore fans...now is the time.. And please reduce the ad...too much...

Think...for me dec mag was ok only because of the DVD..mag was horrible.nearly everything was known,no new stuff...

Same problem for me too. The Ubuntu 7.10 DVD was faulty. It just didn't load !

Digit not yet reached the Goan News Stands till date. Whereas PC World is the first to reach before 3rd of every month. Looks like PC World is fast catching up with Digit in every area.......

A poor issue in my view. Mag contents were nowhere near the standard of CHIP. Even PC World gave good contents - as it does always.

Far too many ADs IMO.. also if the idea was to split into 5 small booklets, its a poor and greedy idea to have so many ADs in them.. it stinks folks!

Even my Personal tech DVD is not working (mind you, its the least useful dvd, so I cant be ars** to complain).. thankfully rest all are fine (especially entertainment and ubuntu)

Movies are pathetic to say the least.. cannot think of anyone watching such lame stuff.. Cmon digit, why do u serve us such bummers!?! I expected some good documentaries or animated films atleast..

Overall very disappointed.. I'm not buying until June '08 anniversary issue unless I find something worth my money..

And the idea of splitting the mag is good but contents were not much.they were good but mag was stuffed with ads.contents of dvds are average.also please have a look at the UI of chip.its much better.
